MINUTES FOR WORTH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION BOARD MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2011 AT 7:00 P.M. The Worth County Board of Education met on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Worth County Board Conference Room. Chairman William Jenkins called the meeting to order. Stacey Rutledge, Principal, Worth County Primary School gave the invocation. Chairman Jenkins led the pledge to the flag and welcomed visitors. All Board Members were present. Also in attendance were Dr. Barbara Thomas, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Clarence Miller, Board Attorney. ADOPTION OF AGENDA Randy Bacon made the motion to approve the agenda for March 10, 2011. Melvin Jefferson seconded the motion and the vote passed unanimously. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Mr. Steve Bennett and Ms. Irene Hall were present representing the Housing Authority. Mr. Bennett addressed the Board concerning the Holley Elementary School building. Mr. Bennett agreed to get legal documentation to Judge Miller concerning a lease agreement between the Housing Authority and the Board of Education. RECOGNITIONS/SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Recognitions 1. Tiffany Sevier, Principal, Worth County Middle School, recognized Scott Roach, an eighth grade student at Worth County Middle School, as the System Spelling Bee Winner. Scott was also sixth out of 90 participants in the District Spelling Bee held in Moultrie, Ga. 2. Dr. Thomas recognized School Social Worker, Tracie Turner, and her intern, Chelsea Brown. She thanked them for their role in making the lives of our students better and making their educational process successful. 3. Dr. Thomas introduced SGM Beard. SGM Beard announced the WCHS Rifle Team had won the Region championship and were to host the first round of the State competition. Students recognized were Jacey Tharpe, Curtis Creel, Chase Nelms, Spencer Tucker, Johnathon Merritt, Zackary Gardner, Jeremy Molina, Cody Finder, and Ivie Young. WCBE March 10, 2011 Page 1

4. Scott Chafin, CTAE Director, at Worth County High School introduced the Skills USA Region Competition winners. Students recognized were Brandon Whitehead 1 st place in Region in Welding and Conley Avery 3 rd place in Region in Residential Wiring. Brandon will represent WCHS at the State competition in March. Mr. Chafin also recognized Mr. Mickey Bentley, WCHS Skills USA advisor. 5. Mr. Chafin also recognized students earning Gold Certificates in the Work Ready Assessment program. He asked Mrs. Beverly Hendrix, advisor, to come forward and present the certificates. Mrs. Hendrix presented certificates to Lindsey Sumer, Robert Adams, Dylan Adkins, Roger Hall, Jr., Michael Mochmer, and Mason Roberts. Lindsey also received a $100.00 gift card for her essay. OPEN AND AWARD BIDS Opened bids for the E-Rate 2011 Internal Connection. The decision of the Board was to open and confirm bids and then give to the Superintendent and the Technology Department to review. Bid was tabled until next meeting. Opened and awarded the Worth County Middle School Bathroom Partitions/Demolition/Tile Bid to Southern Commercial Materials (the lowest responsible bidder meeting bid specs) in the amount $56,485.64. Mike Roberts seconded the motion and Approval of the Cooperative Agreement for the Establishment and Operation of a Recreation Program. Public citizens nominees were David Cooper and Bruce Jackson and Butch Jenkins will serve as Chair for the Board of Education. Utilities will be billed to the Recreation Department for BOE facilities. Mike Roberts made the motion to approve as presented. Randy Bacon seconded the motion and it passed with a 4-1 vote. Melvin Jefferson abstained. Approval of the first reading of Board Policy JCDAG (Bullying). Jerry Jones made the motion to approve as presented. Randy Bacon seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Approval of the 2011-2012 school calendar. Jerry Jones made the motion to approve as presented. Randy Bacon seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Approval of the Class Size Exemption Resolution. Mike Roberts made the motion to approve as presented. Melvin Jefferson seconded the motion and Approval of an agreement with Millenium Second Chance Ed. to use space at the Board of Education in the wing that previously housed the Alternative School beginning July 1, 2011 and concluding June 30, 2012. Jerry Jones made the motion to approve as presented.
