The International Commission on Civil Status (ICCS) is an intergovernmental organisation whose aim is to facilitate international co-operation in civil-status matters and to improve the operation of national civil-status departments. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is Europe s flagship laboratory for the life sciences. EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1974 and is supported by over 20 member states. Staff and scientists at EMBL perform fundamental research to study the story of life, develop new technologies, offer scientific services, and train the next generation of scientists. EMBL is an international, innovative and interdisciplinary organisation. It operates across six sites in Europe and employs more than 1600 people, from over 80 countries. ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world s most productive astronomical observatory. ESO employs 680 staff and is supported by 16 countries, along with the host state of Chile. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three observing sites in Chile. The ESRF, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, is an international research facility based on a particle accelerator and located in Grenoble, France. Thanks to innovative engineering and high-level scientific vision, it is recognised as one of the top research institutions worldwide. The ESRF employs 650 staff and welcomes thousands of scientists for experiments in fields such as biology, medicine, earth and environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics. The European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is an operational satellite agency at the heart of Europe. Our purpose is to gather accurate and reliable satellite data on weather, climate and the environment around the clock, and to deliver them to our Member and Cooperating States, to our international partners, and to users world-wide. EUROCONTROL is a civil-military intergovernmental organization, with 41 Member States from across Europe. Our Headquarters are located in Belgium with specialised offices in France (research), Luxembourg (training) and Maastricht (Air Traffic Control center). We are committed to building a Single European Sky that will deliver the air traffic management (ATM) performance required for the 21st century and beyond. We play a unique role at the European level in coordinating efforts from all aviation stakeholders to achieve common ATM goals. The European X-ray free-electron laser (European XFEL) is an new international research facility of superlatives, providing ultrashort and ultrahigh-brilliance X-ray laser flashes that will enable completely new opportunities for science. The European XFEL GmbH, the nonprofit company that operates the facility, has a workforce of over 300 employees, comprising scientists, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff from more than 40 different countries. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With over 194 Member states, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral & independent organization. Its mission is to protect the lives & dignity of victims of armed conflict & to provide them with assistance. The ICRC is at the origin of the International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement & contemporary international humanitarian law, which is a set of rules seeking, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities & restricts the means & methods of warfare. 7

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. International IDEA s mission is to support sustainable democratic change by providing comparative knowledge, and assisting in democratic reform, and influencing policies and politics. International IDEA acts as a catalyst for democracy building; by providing knowledge resources, policy proposals and supporting democratic reforms in response to specific national requests. It works together with policy makers, governments, UN organizations and agencies and regional organizations engaged in the field of democracy building. The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is a research institute financed by 13 countries. It operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The ILL s mission is to make its facilities available to scientists from around the world. Each year 1500 of them come to run some 800 experience projects in physics, chemistry, biology, materials and nuclear & particle physics which result in over 600 publications. Established in 1951, International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 169 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need. The International Trade Centre (ITC) is the only development agency that is fully dedicated to supporting the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). ITC enables SMEs in developing and transition economies to become more competitive and connect to international markets for trade and investment, thus raising incomes and creating job opportunities, especially for women, young people, and poor communities. Established in 1964, the ITC is the joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the leading UN agency for information and communication technologies, with the mission to connect the world. ITU manages the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits at the international level, works to improve communication infrastructures in the developing world, and establishes global standards that foster seamless interconnection of a vast range of communication systems. ITU organizes global events bringing together the most influential government and private sector representatives to exchange ideas and knowledge to benefit all. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) plays a critical role to ensure that people s life-saving needs are coherently addressed before, during and after humanitarian emergencies, by coordinating disaster preparedness, facilitate sustainable solutions and raise international funds. People affected by crises are at the centre of everything OCHA does and principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and operational independence underpin OCHA s advocacy and operations, and this in the world s most severe crises including Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Yemen. 9

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a unique international institution which sets the standards and defines best practices in almost every field of economic endeavour. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague, The Netherlands, is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention. As of today OPCW has 192 Member States, who are working together to achieve a world free of chemical weapons and share the collective goal of preventing chemistry from ever again being used for warfare. To this end, the Convention contains four key provisions: destroying all existing chemical weapons under international verification by the OPCW; monitoring chemical industry to prevent new weapons from re-emerging; providing assistance and protection to States Parties against chemical threats; and fostering international cooperation to strengthen implementation of the Convention and promote the peaceful use of chemistry. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the world s largest regional security organisation. It offers a forum for political negotiations and decision-making in the fields of early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation, and puts the political will of its 57 participating States into practice through its unique network of field missions. The OSCE has a comprehensive approach to security that encompasses politico military, economic and environmental, and human aspects. Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (french: Organisation intergouvernementale pour les transports internationaux ferroviaires, OTIF) is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to international rail transport. It has been active since 1893. It now has 50 Member States. OTIF develops unified railway law to connect Europe, Asia and Africa. It uses simple and effective tools to promote, improve and facilitate international carriage by rail. OTIF provides legal and technical interoperability for international carriage by rail. It works in close partnership with the European Union, the European Union Agency for Railways, the International Rail Transport Committee, the International Union of Railways, the Organization for Co-operation between Railways and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. 11

The South Centre is an intergovernmental organization of developing countries established in 1995 with its headquarters in Geneva. As the multilateral think tank of the South, the Centre provides policy advice and undertakes research and analysis on key issues such as development, international trade, macroeconomic policy, global health, innovation, climate change and sustainable development. We promote South-South Cooperation and more equitable relations between North and South to the sustainable development of all peoples. UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women aims to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the UN Charter, UN Women, among other issues, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a permanent intergovernmental body created in 1964, and dedicated to empowering developing countries so that they benefit from fair and sustainable integration in the global economy. In addition to organizing the four-yearly world summits that set the tone for global trade and development, UNCTAD produces cutting-edge research to help policymakers make smart and strategic choices on a host of issues, from investment, transport and the digital economy, to illicit financial flows, tourism, commodities and green goods. 12

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was founded in 1966. The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, during the aftermath of the Second World War, to help millions of Europeans who had fled or lost their homes. United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNI- TAR) develops the individual, institutional and organizational capacities of countries through high-quality learning solutions and related services to enhance decision making and to support country-level action for overcoming global challenges. Housed at the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) serves as the representative office of the Secretary-General at Geneva. With more than 1,600 staff, it is the biggest duty stations outside of United Nations headquarters in New York. The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is an autonomous institute in the UN system dedicated to multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on social dimensions of current development issues in Social Policy, Gender and Sustainable Development. Our small Geneva-based staff engages in research, communications and policy engagement activities in partnership with a global network of people and institutions to co-create knowledge, and shape policy and practice. unrisd.org The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva. The mission of UPOV is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society. UPOV has 75 members covering the territories of 94 States. Plant breeding is a major contributor to increased food security within the context of climate change. The UPOV system plays a crucial role in encouraging plant breeders to meet that objective (see http://www.upov.int). The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is the United Nations specialized agency for postal services. Established in 1874 the UPU, located in Bern, is the second oldest international organisation worldwide and has around 260 staff members. It is the primary forum for cooperation between governments, regulators, Posts and other stakeholders of the global postal sector. The UPU sets the rules for international mail exchanges among its 192 member countries, develops technical standards and encourages the adoption of regulations among all postal sector players. The UPU also works to stimulate trade facilitation, social, financial and economic inclusion through the postal network. Member countries rely on the UPU for technical assistance to help them strengthen their postal network, processes and offerings. 15

The World Customs Organization (WCO) is an independent intergovernmental organisation whose primary mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Customs Administrations worldwide. As the only intergovernmental organisation specialized in Customs matters, the WCO currently represents 182 Members (governments) across the globe at all stages of social and economic development. Being the global centre of Customs expertise and the voice of the international Customs community, the WCO provides an ideal forum for Customs administrations and their stakeholders to hold in-depth discussions, exchange experiences, and share best practices on a range of international Customs and trade issues. The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide and working towards the global goal of ending hunger by 2030. WFP is delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Twothirds of its work is in conflict-affected countries where people are three times more likely to be undernourished than those living in countries without conflict. An average of 80 million people receive food assistance in around 80 countries each year by WFP while almost 15,000 people are dedicatedly working for the organisation. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. More than 7000 people from more than 150 countries work for the Organisation in 150 WHO offices all over the world. 16

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation. A specialized agency of the United Nations, WIPO assists its 191 member states in developing a balanced international IP legal framework to meet society s evolving needs. It provides business services for obtaining IP rights in multiple countries and resolving disputes. It delivers capacity-building programs to help developing countries benefit from using IP. And it provides free access to unique knowledge banks of IP information. The World Trade Organization (WTO) deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. Beginning life on 1 January 1995, the WTO succeeded the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade which had regulated world trade since 1948. Over the past 20 years, the WTO has made a major contribution to the strength and stability of the global economy, helping to boost trade growth, resolve numerous trade disputes and support the integration of developing countries into the trading system. Currently with 164 members, of which more than one-fifth are represented by least-developed countries, WTO activities are supported by a Secretariat of some 700 staff, led by the WTO Director-General. The Secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and the three official languages are English, French and Spanish. 17
