Department of Integrated Engineering Arts and Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) Electives 2017-18 Required Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Electives (minimum 16 Credits) In the interest of making engineers fully aware of their social responsibilities and better able to consider related factors in the decision-making process, course work in the humanities and social sciences is required as an integral part of our mechanical and civil engineering programs. To satisfy this requirement, the courses selected must provide both breadth and depth, as described below. Only a select number of non-skill building courses in the humanities and social sciences are acceptable. Courses may be chosen to satisfy the university cultural diversity requirement simultaneously with the program H/SS requirements. Each student should discuss the selection of courses to meet these requirements with his/her academic advisor early in their academic career. Specifically, the 16 credit minimum requirements include: a) at least 6 credits in the humanities b) at least 9 credits in the social sciences, of which 3 must be either microeconomics or macroeconomics c) (a) and (b) must total at least 16 credits d) The Depth Requirement can be fulfilled by a designated sequence (such as HIST 180 and HIST 181) or by taking a 100-level and a 300-level course in the same topic area (such as PHIL 100W and PHIL 321W). Transfer students should either complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum to waive this requirement or should take two courses in the same department. The list of acceptable H/SS electives is given below. Because of a difference in labeling between engineering and MnSCU transfer courses, transfer students can use History courses as either humanities or social sciences, but not both. Diverse Cultures Graduation Requirement All MSU undergraduate students must satisfy a Diverse Cultures credit requirement for graduation. Students pursuing a baccalaureate degree must take at least two courses and a minimum of 6 credits from the list of courses designated as Diverse Cultures courses. Students pursuing a baccalaureate degree must take either: a) at least one course for a minimum of 3 credits from the list of courses designated as Purple (Content) and at least one course for a minimum of 3 credits from the list of courses designated as Gold (Experiential and Reflective), OR b) at least two courses for a minimum of 6 credits from the list of courses designated as Purple (Content). c) at least two different disciplines must be represented. The Purple (Content-Based) and Gold (Experiential or Reflective) courses are designated by " " and " " respectively in the H/SS Electives list. Transfer students with 30-59 credits are granted 3 credits towards the Purple course requirement. Transfer students with 60 or more credits are granted 3 Purple course credits and 3 Gold course credits, thus satisfying their entire Diverse Cultures Graduation Requirement. Students must take courses from at least two different disciplines to satisfy the Diverse Cultures Graduation Requirement.
