Volume 26 Number 3 Volume 26 Number 3 A Note from the President This year our nominating committee has been very successful in getting multiple persons to run for our available offices on the Aladdin Villas Corporate Board of Directors. I am very proud of this success. I know that Aladdin will always be in good hands when we have more than just one person who expresses interest in how our community is run. For this reason, I am inviting all of the candidates for each available 2015 open office to submit a short (one to two paragraphs) biography and their qualifications for the office they are seeking. This information will then be posted in the January edition of the News and Views to help you make the best selection for your vote in February. Thank you to all these candidates for their participation! Rosemary and Dave Tucker A note from your editor: For the officer candidates who will be submitting biographies and qualifications to be posted in the News & Views, PLEASE do so by email. First off, I will not be editing anything received. I will post the write-ups exactly as you provide them to me. Secondly, too much typing tends to kick my arthritis into high gear which means I drink too many margaritas, don t sleep at night and get unusually grumpy! Thirdly, please have your write-ups to me no later than the Monday following the general meeting, In January that would be January 5 by 5pm. Thank you all for your cooperation and good luck to all the candidates! Thank you in advance! Your Editor, Kathy Dickey ZZNEWS Do you have a computer? Thank you! Thanksgiving Dinner 2014 A big thank you to everyone that was involved in the 2014 Thanksgiving Dinner. The tables were so pretty and great food was enjoyed by all. A big thank you to the hosts and hostesses for helping us out and some of you it was your first time to be a host, so a big thank you for taking over this job. One of our longest running hostesses is gone from Aladdin Villas now and I am sure Dorothy Price would be so proud her table is going on in her memory. Everyone at that table, a big thank you. Also, how can we go without saying the kitchen crew is fabulous, awesome, outstanding. They never cease to amaze us. Whether it was helping with the set up of tables and chairs or taking down of the tables and chairs, filling water pitchers, coffee pitchers or putting table cloths on the tables, a big thank you to everyone that pitched in and helped. Once again, it was a pleasure to be your hosts for the Thanksgiving Dinner. If you are interested in taking over this position, I will be leaving this position after the Christmas dinner, so please give me a call. A very short, short term job. Thanks Again! Sharon and Chuck Rusher, Rae and Vince Thill Chip Forbear chairperson for all crafts: telephone number has been changed to : 956-598-5175 and e-mail to: chip_forbear@yahoo.com. Thank You Chip I have had problems with my computer lately so thought I would pass these on to everyone. Viruses and malware have become serious problems for all computer users. My computer guy recommends two software for everyone s home computers and they are both FREE. AVG and AVAST both block viruses, spyware, and malware. They prevent spying and data theft and block phishing scams. They also get rid of browser addons that are those annoying pop-up windows. AVG.com and AVAST.com both have a FREE downloadable version of the software. These software automatically update to protect your computer. Another important software is Malwarebytes which can be downloaded at malwarebytes.org for free. This software detects worms, Trojans and other spyware not managed by anti-virus software. If you are not running anti-virus and anti-malware software on your computers, you are vulnerable to both as well as passing them on to others when you send emails. Kathy Dickey 3 Let me know and I will include them here. We will start our own reference list! I am starting with my recommendation. He s saved me on more than one occasion! Computer repairs - David Silva, 956.240.4016, comes to your home, fast service and very reasonable! The next AARP Driver Safety class, formerly known as 55 Alive, will be held in the Hacienda Room on Tuesday, January 13 from 8:00 AM to noon. This is the four hour course which is all that we are allowed to teach here in Texas. For those insurance companies that honor the defensive driving discount, and accept the four hour course, this satisfies their requirements. If you are interested in taking the course there is a registration sheet in the Ballroom. Also, please bring to class your driver s license, AARP card if a member and a check made out to AARP for $15 if you are an AARP member and $20 if you are not. One more class will be held this season on March 10. For more information contact Frank Unger at 956/583-9356. Vendor Show On Tuesday, January 6, from 9-11am there will be a Vendor Show in the Ballroom, put on by the Welcome Home RGV, Kristi Collier. Vendors will have information about their services available in the valley. There will be door prizes!
