Warm ups 11.28.2016 *What is a key cultural difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland? *What is a key political difference between the two?

Lesson Objective: *describe what NATO is *describe key components of the relationship between the EU and the U.S.

What is NATO? NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization): a political and military organization consisting of 28 member countries in North America and Europe

NATO s Activity POLITICAL - NATO promotes democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defence and security issues to build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict.

NATO s Activity MILITARY - NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military capacity needed to undertake crisis-management operations. These are carried out under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - NATO s founding treaty - or under a UN mandate, alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organizations.

Article 5 of NATO The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

NATO s Original Purpose *in 1949, NATO was formed by 12 countries to protect against possible aggression from the Soviet Union *it was also to help stop the spread of communism

NATO Member Countries

Warsaw Pact *the Soviet Union responded by creating an alliance of their own, called the Warsaw Pact *it does not exist today, and several of the countries that were previously members of it are now in NATO

*This map shows the Warsaw Pact countries and the NATO countries during the Cold War

NATO Today *some say that NATO is just as important today as it ever has been in order to keep Russia in check *in 2014, Russia took over part of the Ukraine, and there is still fighting going on in that area

NATO Today *during the 2016 presidential election, the U.S. financial support of NATO became a big talking point *the following graph will show a little more about NATO s financial support

U.S. and E.U. Environmental Ties *the U.S. hosted the first ever meeting of the world s largest economies with the purpose of developing renewable energy sources in 2010

U.S. and E.U. Poverty Assistance *the U.S. and E.U. provide 80% of the official aid to developing countries *What are your thoughts on helping to develop other countries in the world?
