Why did Wisconsin become a territory in 1836? Why did Wisconsin become a state in 1848?

How could Wisconsin become a territory? 1. Enough European Americans needed to live in Wisconsin to be recognized as its own territory. Native Americans did not count. 2. The United States government recognized Wisconsin as a new territory. How could Wisconsin become a state? 1. Sixty thousand (60,000) voters (free white males) needed to live in the Wisconsin territory and vote for Wisconsin becoming a state. 2. Wisconsin male delegates needed to write a state constitution which stated Wisconsin citizens rights and responsibilities. White male voters needed to approve the constitution. 3. The United States Congress had to approve statehood for Wisconsin.

How does a bill become a law in Wisconsin? 1. Someone must come up with an idea for a law. 2. A member of the Assembly must write a bill. 3. The Assembly must discuss the bill. The Assembly also invites citizens to talk about the bill s importance. Then the Assembly must vote to approve or veto (reject) the bill. 4. The Senate members must discuss the bill. The Senate also invites citizens to explain the bill s importance. Then the Senate must vote to approve or veto the bill. 5. The Governor must sign to approve the bill or veto the bill. If the Governor signs the bill, it becomes law. If the Governor vetoes the bill, two-thirds of the Assembly and the Senate must vote to approve the bill in order for the bill to become law.
