P = Load distributed on roller (dan) + own weight (dan); l = Roller length; f = Deflection (mm). Ø A mm 60 75 85 100 100/5 120 140 160 L 160 200 250 J x mm 4 205.030 464.844 744.040 1.260.567 2.043.500 2.735.130 4.778.660 6.078.090 8.167.180 17.455.670 37.910.050 Elasticity modulus 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 6900 DaN mm 2 Deflection mm 110 250 400 670 981 1400 2495 2720 4330 8950 20140 EXAMPLE You want to know the deflection on a 1.5 meter long roller (diameter 75) carrying ribbon material whose tension is 200 dan set at a winding angle of 120 on the roller (Fig. 2.3). Load Ptot on the roller; sum of the weight of the roller and the load of the ribbon material. This will be α = 60 and therefore = 1 Fig. 2.3 P = 200 x 1 = 200 dan Weight = 1,5 x 2,687 = 4,03 Kg = 4,03 dan Ptot = 200 + 4,03 = 204,03 Given the load Ptot acting on the roller, you can estimate deflection. Deflection = 204,03 x (1,5) 3 2,75 mm 250 6 7

2.3 Load as function of deflection Load in dan for 0,1% deflections of the length between supports EXAMPLE L = 1500 Deflection = 1,5 mm Load (dan) 10'000 1'000 Ø 250 Ø 200 Ø 160 Ø 140 Ø 160 Ø 60 Ø 75 Ø 85 Ø 100 Ø 100/5 Ø 120 Ø 140 Ø 160 Ø 160 L Ø 200 Ø 250 100 Ø 120 Ø 100/5 Ø 100 Ø 85 Ø 75 10 250 500 750 1000 1250 1500 1750 2000 2250 2500 2750 3000 3250 3500 3750 4000 4250 4500 4750 5000 Ø 60 Length (mm) Fig. 2.4 Deflection is proportional to the applied load. For example, if there is a double deflection compared to that shown in the table, you will get a double load and so on. EXAMPLE You want to know the load generating a max. deflection of 4 mm on a 1.5 meter Ø 100 roller, cut across diameter 100 curve with the 1500 mm axis, you will get a value just under 300 dan. At this load, you will get a deflection of 0.1% of the overall length. The requirement was having a deflection of 4 mm, therefore the load will be P = 300 1,5 4 800 dan. Calculating any deflection for the final load, you will get 4.06mm. Note: the graph is in a base-10 logarithmic scale and considers the weight of the roller.
