THE PEACE CORPS I. One of the first programs created by the New Frontier was the Peace Corps II. The Peace Corps is a volunteer organization that helps developing nations in Asia, Africa and Latin America

SPACE RACE I. During the Cold War the USA and USSR competed over who could get to space first II. October 1957 = Soviet Union launched first satellite à Sputnik 1 III. April 1961 = Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space IV. The American space agency (NASA) struggled to keep up with the Soviet Union

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 I. In July of 1964, LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act through Congress II. The Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin, and granted the federal government new powers to enforce the law III. VOTING RIGHTS ACT 1964 I. A portion of the Civil Rights Act 1964 was to protect voting rights for all Americans II. HEALTHCARE I. LBJ and Congress enhanced Social Security by establishing Medicare and Medicaid II. Medicare provided health insurance and low-cost medical care to the elderly III. Medicaid provided health benefits to poor Americans

HOUSING Weaver I. LBJ and Congress spent money building thousands of units of lowrent public housing II. The Great Society established the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to ensure every American had a home III. HUD appointed the first black cabinet member named Robert Weaver

IMMIGRATION REFORM I. The Great Society also brought reform to immigration laws II. The Natural Origins Acts of the 1920s discriminated against immigrants outside of Western Europe III. The Immigration Act of 1965 opened the door for many non- European immigrants to settle in the U.S.

THE ENVIRONMENT I. The Great Society also sought to improve the environment II. The Water Quality Act of 1965 required states to clean up their rivers and lakes III. LBJ ordered the government to stop allowing corporations to pollute the American environment

CONSUMER PROTECTION I. Consumer protections laws were also passed during the 1960s II. Major safety laws were passed in the American auto industry seatbelts and safety equipment III. Also passed Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 IV. Americans can feel safer now in their homes, on the road, and at the supermarket

WARREN COURT I. Reforms were not limited to the President and Congress Warren II. The Judicial Branch led by the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Earl Warren made numerous rulings to protect the American people III. The Warren Court upheld American s Constitution rights on many occasions A. Outlawed prayer in public schools, made it illegal to sensor books, ensured representation in Congress was equal

WARREN COURT RULINGS I. In Mapp v. Ohio (1961) SCOTUS ruled that illegally seized evidence could not be used in court II. In Escobedo v. Illinois the SCOTUS ruled that the accused has the right to have an attorney present when questioned by police III. In Miranda v. Arizona the court ruled that all suspects must be read their rights before questioning
