DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT, SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK CAVE HILL CAMPUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014 WELCOME Academic year 2013/14 presents both opportunity and challenge for young minds about to enter the exciting world of self-discovery, new growth and knowledge acquisition. It finds us in a world in which old ways of seeing and doing things appear to be in crisis, but yet with no clearly discernible new alternative, world views, ideas and practices to provide guidance on the way forward. As such, this is a perfect time to be a student. All the information at our disposal suggests that the next few years will witness continued job loss and economic tightening. Such moments, difficult as they may be, present conditions for persons, young and old, to invest in re-tooling and re-skilling, and most importantly, in building new knowledge and ideas that will help to shape the future. This is the essential role of a University, and this is why regional governments have invested substantial amounts of public funds in tertiary education. It is this public commitment to higher learning which explains your presence here today as an undergraduate member of the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work of the Cave Hill campus of the UWI, and to which I am pleased to welcome you. We embrace you into an institution which has made an immeasurable contribution to regional and global development, and we urge you to be ever mindful of both your place in, and your debt to, the history that has placed you where you are today. I give you the commitment that we will strive assiduously to bring out your full potential and that, with your help, we can collectively fulfill the mission that our governments, people and foreparents have placed on our collective shoulders. Tennyson S.D. Joseph, Ph.D. Head of Department 1
