Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics Sonia Gandhi strives to maintain the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. To do this she opted for a back-seat role rather than become Prime Minister. Gender may have helped in so far as being a mother and widow.

Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics Mayawati receiving a garland of notes Mayawati & Kanshi Ram statues Mayawati remained unmarried and cultivated the Behenji (sister) title.

Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics Jayalalithaa also remained unmarried and projected herself as a mother-figure. And Mamata Banerjee, also unmarried is known as Didi (sister)

Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics Matriarchal Authority: Madhu Kishwar (Indian feminist) writes: This is a variation of our family scene wherein many men find it hard to deal with wives desiring equality. But the very same man has no difficulty in accepting his mother as an authority figure or even a wife who begins to assume matriarchal authority. Most women, trapped in dependency, don t often get to be taken seriously. However, when they manoeuvre themselves into a superior position, whether as mothers, elder sisters, grandmothers, aunts or even well established wives, they acquire numerous advantages that accumulate, including certain well defined rights to order and command.

Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics The Cult of the Goddess: AK Ramanujan (Indian philosopher) pointed out: in India we have two kinds of goddesses the benign consort goddesses like Parvati and Lakshmi People revere but do not fear them. By contrast, there are far more numerous non-consort goddesses who are far more powerful. Avenging a wrong: Jayalalithaa justifies her authoritarian ways and her vindictive politics as the legitimate response of a woman long wronged and exploited by men. Mamata presents herself as a victim of the CPM s dictatorship who will not rest till she has destroyed their power. Mayawati claims to be avenging the collective, historic insults heaped upon the entire Dalit community.

Conclusion: Manufacturing Charisma The role of Gender in Indian Politics Women leaders have risen through the ranks to become power brokers in Indian politics which remains a maledominated sphere. Their power does draw upon gender dynamics and cultural resources relating to feminity and womanhood. However, the particular political configurations have also been important in promoting their careers: Tamil Nadu: AIADMK vs. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) West Bengal: TC vs. Communists Uttar Pradesh: BSP vs. Samajwadi Party
