Tweet 0 0 1 CALIFORNIA AMERICAN WATER Last May, the Monterey County Congressman Sam Farr visited San Planning Commission issued the last Clemente Dam as part of a Cal Am media event today. permit California American Water needed to start the construction. (Or perhaps it should be called deconstruction, as it's all geared to taking down the massive dam.) That summer, crews built a new access road, relocated fish and started work on a reroute of the Carmel River. This summer, according to today's Cal Am press release, they'll permanently reroute the river around the accumulated sediment. They'll also start the process of taking down the 106-foot-tall concrete arch dam. Summer 2015 will see the dam's full removal and restoration of the 68-acre project site, according to Cal Am's schedule. The project is intended to address seismic and flood safety issues and help restore the overdrafted Carmel River closer to its natural state. "When this project is complete," California Coastal Conservancy Executive Officer Sam Schuchat stated, "you won't even be able to tell a dam was ever there."
