Project Objectives - Environment 1. Harmonised Environment Statistics System based on international standards like the UN Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) (within three years), the UN International Recommendations on Water Statistics (IRWS) and the UN System of Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA) (five years). 2. All countries use the adopted UNSD/UNEP Questionnaires 3. Promote use of a harmonised GIS platform for analysis and dissemination 4. Regular dissemination of Environment statistics by GCC-Stat

Work Plan OBJECTIVE 1: Harmonization of the environment statistics system 1.1. Capacity building on environment statistics (proposal Water and GIS for 1 st year & Waste for second year) 1.1.1 Regional workshop 1.1.2 Technical assistance missions (3 missions per year) 1.1.3 Study visit to countries with best practice 1.2. Coordination 1.2.1 Establish working group on environment statistics 1.2.2 Meetings 1.2.3 Support countries in setting up national working group 1.3. GCC-Stat Current Status Survey - Environment Strengths/weaknesses, quality Main strengths Environment statistics : Data on the state the environment in some countries, willingness to implement additional questions into existing surveys and to start additional surveys GIS tools : implemented in most of the countries with best practices in one or two countries Synergy : With ministry of environment in some cases and UNSD in another ones International standards, classification and framework: two best practices Environment Statistical Unit: Plan to establish independent units in two countries (in 2014 and 2015) Main weaknesses Environment statistics : Not all necessary data are available or made available for statistical purposes in general, and no data on pressure on the environment in some countries, GIS tools : Used mainly for administrative purpose and Not linked to environment data Synergy : Lack in coordination between the specialist departments and IT department and Lack in cooperation with data provider Human resources: Insufficient staff resources and lack of experience in some cases
