Northern part of the constituency comprises plots, which include Richmond, Woodvale and Nondwane Estates. There is also the upper Umguza dam and the Hillside Reservoir. It boasts of numerous schools, the Bulawayo Polytechnic College. Most of the residents own businesses, restaurants and flea markets in the CBD. The constituency is made up mainly of well-up people. People of Bulawayo have always voted for the opposition. Election History In the year 2008 there were 29398 registered voters and in 2013 there were 29747 registered voters and 23 096 in 2018. In this constituency during the 2013 elections, MDC T won with 3786 votes, ZANU PF party had 908 votes and an INDEPENDENT had 472 votes. 2013 Election Results Political Party Name of Candidate Number of Votes % of Votes ZANU PF Moyo Mhlungisi 2 827 25% MDC T Sibanda Dorcas Staff 6 365 65% Polling Stations In 2013, Bulawayo Central had a total of 61 polling stations as compared to 50 that have been set for 2018. It is a predominantly black working-class area, with some middle and upper class.it comprises of Newton West, Montrose, Bellevue, Barham Green, Donington, Belmont, Tshabalala and Sizinda. Bulawayo South is one of the largest constituencies in Bulawayo. Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Montrose studios are based in this constituency.

The delimitation of this constituency does not display common interests as high density suburbs were mixed with low and medium-density areas. These people have different issues and having one representative does not guarantee that their needs are met. Some of the people are formally employed, while others survive on informal sector activities like street vending, black marketing, cross border trading, cash dealings. The harsh economic conditions, shortage of basic commodities, shortage of water and electricity have afflicted people and may influence voting pattern in favour of opposition. Election History Notable former members for this constituency is David Coltart, who in the 2008 election moved to the Senate. The MDC has become a dominant party in Bulawayo South and in 2000 saw the ZANU-PF candidate suffer a heavy loss of 51.6% of the vote. In the 2005 election, however, the ZANU-PF made a small, but significant gain, while the MDC lost over 8,000 votes due in large part to poor voter turnout in the 2005 general election. The decline in support from 2005 to 2000 can also be attributed to constituency redistricting. David Coltart has remained a key member of the MDC as one of its highest-ranking members. In 2008 there were recorded 23226 registered voters, 21 693 in 2013 and 16 752 in 2018. 2013 Election Results Political Party Name of Candidate Number of Votes % of Votes ZANU PF Dube Bafana Andy 1 787 18% MDC T Polling Stations Cross Edward Graham 6 364 66% In 2013, Bulawayo South had a total of 26 polling centres as compared to 25 that have been set for 2018. Although people in this constituency have lost interest in electoral politics as evidence by the decline of the number of voters in 2005 compared to 2000 elections, harsh economic conditions characterized by galloping inflation,

critical shortage of basic commodities and cash, water, electricity are most likely to influence their voting patterns. Most people in this constituency are formally employed. The Bulawayo elites reside in this area. Fewer people do street vending while a large number population are cross borders trading and owning flea markets. The National University of Science and Technology is located in this constituency. Social amenities are proportional to the population mostly because some were constructed in pre-independent era. Facilities that were once the light of the areas such as Entumbane shopping malls have deteriorated and in need of repair. The major tarred roads that link the constituency with the city centre and other constituencies are characterized by potholes and faded markings. Although people in this constituency have lost interest in electoral process for a number of reasons including previous pre-election violence, predictability of results among others, there are a number of things that will influence their voting patterns. Reasons include harsh economic conditions, shortage of basic goods including electricity and water and the underdeveloped infrastructure. This constituency is linked to the Entumbane Crisis now known as Gukurahundi. People largely survive on informal sector activities such as street vending, cross border trade, illegal cash dealings, and black marketing and backyard saloons among others. The rate of people formally employed has been drastically reduced as companies have continued to close and
