Youngest Indian to score century on Test debut o Prithvi Shaw scored a century in the first Test against West Indies at Rajkot to become the youngest Indian to score a century on debut. o Shaw surpassed the record set by Abbas Ali Baig who had scored a fifty against England in 1959 when he was 20 years and 126 days old. 1 P a g e
o He also became the second youngest Indian to score a Test century after the Sachin Tendulkar. Operation Samudra Maitri to assist Indonesia o India has launched 'Operation Samudra Maitri' to assist victims of earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. o Two Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, C-130J, and C-17 departed carrying onboard medical personnel and relief material for Indonesia. o Three Indian Naval Ships - INS Tir, INS Sujatha, and INS Shardul have also been mobilized to carry out disaster relief. Swachh Survekshan Grameen Awards 2018 o Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave awards to top Ranked State, District and State based on the Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018. o Haryana was ranked as the best State while Satara District of Maharashtra was ranked as the best district as per the ranking undertook by Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018. o Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation had commissioned Swachh Survekshan Grameen-2018. AFSPA extended in 3 districts in Arunachal o The Union government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh declaring them as 'disturbed area'. o The 3 districts are Tirap, Changlang, and Longding. o Armed Forces Act, 1958 in these areas has been extended up to March 31, 2019 w.e.f. October 1, 2018. o AFSPA grants special powers to the Indian Armed Forces in 'disturbed areas'. Conference on 'Women in Detention' in Shimla o First Regional Conference on 'Women in Detention and Access to Justice' was organised in Shimla on 4 October 2018. 2 P a g e
o The conference was organised by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in collaboration with the Prison Department, Himachal Pradesh. o The Conference will be in the form of panel discussions with keynote speakers who are experts in the domain areas. World Animal Day: 4 October o October 4th marks the World Animal Day, an international day of action for the rights and welfare of animals that is celebrated all around the world. o The main focus of the Animal Day is to protect the endangered species, natural habitat and welfare of the animals o The day started in 1931 in Florence, Italy to highlight the difficult state of endangered species. RBI allows OMCs to raise money from overseas o The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) to borrow long-term working capital from overseas. o RBI relaxed the policy on borrowing up to 10 billion US dollar from the overseas by the state-owned fuel retailers. o The RBI has allowed them to raise External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) of minimum maturity of 3 or 5 years. Rail Min won 'Swachchta Hi Seva' award o The Ministry of Railways has been declared the best department for its contribution to "Swachchta Pakhwada" under the "Swachchta Hi Seva" category of awards. o The award was presented to the Railway Ministry, on the fourth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission. o The 'Swachchta Hi Seva' campaign was launched in 2017. o Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Rabi crops. o Increased MSP for the current financial year will be marketed in the 2019-20 season. o The MSP of wheat has been raised by 105 rupees per quintal o Safflower by 845 rupees per quintal o Barley by 30 rupees per quintal o Masur by 225 per quintal o Gram by 220 per quintal MoU between India and Russia in MSME o The Union Cabinet has approved a MoU between National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. (NSIC) and JSC- Russian Small & Medium Business Corporation. o The objective of the MoU is to promote cooperation between the Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of the two countries. o It would provide a structured framework for the MSME sector to understand each other's strengths, markets, technologies etc. 2nd Protocol amending the CECA approved o The Union Cabinet gave an ex-post facto approval to the second protocol amending the free trade agreement between India and Singapore. o The free trade agreement is officially known as Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). o It will enhance bilateral trade and will deepen the Economic Cooperation between India and Singapore o CECA came into force in August 2005. SC upholds validity of GST Act o The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Act of 2017. 4 P a g e
o The 2017 Act subsumed various indirect taxes, Central and States surcharges and cess both within and outside the States. o The Supreme Court confirmed the legislative competence of Parliament to enact the 2017 Act. MoU between Ind-Russia on Road Transport o The Union Cabinet approved the MoU between India and Russia on Bilateral Cooperation in the Road Transport and Road Industry. o This will help in the planning and administration of road infrastructure and road network management, transport policy. o The MoU will be signed during the upcoming visit of Russian President to India. Redevelopment of Railway Stations by IRSDC o The Union Cabinet has approved the redevelopment of Railway Stations by Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) as Nodal Agency. o The redevelopment will be done through simplified procedures adapting various business model and for longer lease tenure of up to 99 years. o IRSDC is a joint venture between IRCON and RLDA with a 51:49 equity shareholding India and ADB signed $100m Loan Agreement o The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $100 Million Loan Agreement. o The loan amount will be used to expand sewerage and drainage coverage, provide sewage treatment and strengthen the capacity of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. o The $100 Million loan agreement is the third and final tranche loan under the $400 Million Multi Tranche facility. o Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio launched the Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign (MRVC) in the state. o The campaign targets to vaccinate 4.72 lakh children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years. o The vaccination will help children in battling Measles and Rubella and reduce mortality caused by these diseases. India and ADB Signed $240 Million Loan o The government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $240 million loan. o The loan will be used for providing safe and sustainable drinking water in three districts of the state of West Bengal affected by arsenic, fluoride, and salinity. o Water contamination due to arsenic and fluoride can lead to health problems including cancer and bone diseases. Tech M sign pact with Israeli firm o IT services provider Tech Mahindra announced a partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to develop and offer cybersecurity solutions. o The pact mainly targets cybersecurity at governments, critical infrastructure, and defence sector. o The pact will enable the companies to design custom-made security operation centers (SOCs) and computer emergency response teams (CERTs). Nobel prize in chemistry awarded o The 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Frances H. Arnold, George P. Smith and Sir Gregory P. Winter on 3 October 2018. o They were awarded for their work on harnessing the power of evolution to develop new proteins used in drugs and medical treatments. o Frances H Arnold, George P Smith and Gregory P Winter will share the prize of 9 million Swedish kronor. 6 P a g e
