Pref ace The development of this book follows two extended periods of stay in China. I first travelled to Chongqing in 1985, where I taught until 1987. As well as extensive travels in the country, these two years provided an opportunity to observe the effects of economic reforms on China's political situation and stimulated my interest in research on China's political economy. I returned to China for seven months to carry out fieldwork for my PhD in 1992. Much of the book took shape during this time, and is based on research and interviews conducted at Beijing University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, as well as at Fudan University in Shanghai. I am grateful to have been granted interviews at Beijing University with two of China's most prominent philosophers, Zhang Dainian and Zhu Buokun. Our meetings sparked questions about traditional Chinese political authority that set the tone for the remainder of my research. John Knoblock's translation and exhaustive exegesis of the Confucian philosopher Xunzi's Complete Works became an essential guide along the way. It was through Knoblock's analysis of Xunzi's state theory that I established a connection between ancient and modern authoritarianism in China. I am also indebted to Di Yongjun, Jiang Gangmiao, Li Hong, Wang Zhufeng, and especially Yang Chenqi and Professor Zhang Jiqian of Beijing University, who gave generously of their time in order to assist my research in Beijing. I would also like to express my great appreciation to Professor Peter Nolan of Cambridge University. Peter set me the task of researching political authoritarianism in modern China. His moral support, his reading of draft chapters, his attention to detail and his challenging questions provided invaluable guidance and motivation. I have also benefited greatly from the support and guidance of Geoffrey Hawthorn and Joseph McDermott at Cambridge. I likewise owe a debt of gratitude to Professor David Lumsden and Professor Bernie Frolic of York University in Toronto. It was David who first drew me to the study of China and Bernie who provided a deeper understanding of Chinese politics. Thanking them and the others noted in no way implicates them or my employer in the views expressed in this book. This study would not have reached fruition without the support of a Rotary Foundation Scholarship, a Pacific Cultural Foundation xi

xii Preface Scholarship, a Canadian Centennial Scholarship, a China-Canada Exchange Scholarship and financial assistance from Jesus College, Cambridge. The encouragement of friends along the way also has been a big help. I extend much appreciation to Marie Kallkvist with whom I have shared the challenges and rewards that research can bring. My special thanks to the following people for their assistance, discussions, friendship and good humour, which have all contributed in diverse ways to the completion of this book: Sylvia Chan, David Chennells, Silvana Dean, Kim Ennico, Gerry Fitzpatrick, Rae Fleming, Liz Gordon, Dan Homer, Erling Kagge, Dan and Natalie Kallen, Ake and Ginger Kallkvist, Liu Xiaofeng, Yvette Longman, Andrew Mason, Pankaj Mohan, Suzanne Quay, Susan Reva, Luise Rivolta, Steve Saxby and Tim Weston. My gratitude as well to the editorial staff at Macmillan, and namely to Tim Farmiloe, Sunder Katwala, Linda Auld and their colleagues without whom this book would not have appeared. Finally, I thank my parents, Jack and Rita Twohey, to whom this book is dedicated. They have been a tremendous source of stability, strength and optimism. The book is as much a result of their support, encouragement and patience as it is the product of my own labours. I thank them, my brother Jeff and his wife Nicole for their unstinting loyalty.
