USSVI SOUTHERN COLORADO BASE Brandon Martinez, Base Commander Newsletter for September, 2011 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Here comes Old Man Winter!! Oh, well, we all knew he had to rear his ugly head sooner or later, right? Might as well cowboy up and go along for the ride. It will all be over before you know it and Spring will be here again. It just seems to take longer than it used to for some reason. Our September meeting at The Hangar in Pueblo was very well attended and we accomplished a lot. New officers were elected and we're all set for another year of great Base activities. Brandon Martinez was elected Base Commander with Shawn LaCroix elected to serve as Base Vice Commander. Frank Richard will continue as Base Secretary and Base Historian. Bernie Herpin will continue to serve as Base Treasurer. Steve Iskra will continue on as Storekeeper with Woody Woods continuing to serve as COB. Larry Leek will assume duties as Chaplain and continue as Base Newsletter Editor. Thanks to all who have agreed to serve in these positions and good luck in the coming year. We know that everyone will throw their full support behind these folks and chip in to make 2012 and even bigger success than 2011. A big vote of thanks is in order also to Steve McKee for his great time of service as Base Commander. We accomplished much during his able tenure and we certainly appreciate his hard and dedicated work on behalf of the Base and all of us.
Our October meeting will be held at Bambino's in Colorado Springs on the 15th, so please plan to attend for good food, fun and fellowship. We have several important items on the agenda to discuss and make decisions on, including the Veterans' Day Parade in November, the Christmas Banquet, needed float maintenance and care, etc. Your attendance and input on these important issues is very important and much needed.? No minutes were received to publish this month, so we'll hear them read and vote on them at the meeting.
Commander's Comments Our new Base Commander, Brandon Martinez, expresses his appreciation for his election to serve in that capacity for the upcoming term, and encourages everyone to help out by becoming more involved in all the Base activities and events. We have much to do and accomplish in the coming year and member participation is crucial to the success of all that we do. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Chaplain's Corner It is always appropriate to remember our ailing members in your thoughts and prayers, so please continue to do that. Several are experiencing health issues and issues relating to the aging process, so please do remember them all. Similarly, it is also always appropriate for us to keep all of our service men and women in your prayers. Theirs is a difficult and often dangerous occupation and they are all volunteer guardians of our freedoms and peace. God bless them all and keep them from harm. For faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
Sea Stories and Scuttlebutt I'm continuing to look for some pictures and stories from your time in the Submarine Service. Just send me what you want included and I'll put in exactly what you send. I'm sure everyone would be interested in hearing from anyone who is willing to contribute. I'd like at least one, perhaps two pictures and a short description of what they are and a story to go along with it, or any sea story you'd like to include. Thanks, Editor ////////////////////////////////////////// Parade and Float News As mentioned previously, we will, in all likelihood, enter the float in the Veterans' Day Parade in Colorado Springs next month and will be getting more information on that at the October Base meeting. Please plan to attend the parade if at all possible and ride with us on our beautiful Pride and Joy as we show her off. What a lot of fun it is to participate in these parades and if you haven't had the opportunity to do so as yet,
you are missing a treat. The Labor Day Parade in Fountain was a great success and the crowd response was enthusiastic and encouraging as usual. Thanks to all who participated in that event. That about dogs the hatch for now, shipmates. See you at the meeting. Larry Leek, Newsletter Editor NOTES AND REMINDERS
