Admitted Students Infmation Guide: General Infmation Your studies at the of ELTE University Newly-admitted students are requested to arrive to Budapest by the following date: Admitted to the Autumn semester: September 1 Admitted to the Spring semester: February 1 The first one two weeks of the semester consist of imptant events such as ientation and registration of classes (me infmation below). The general academic calendar can be found online at the website of the university: https://www.elte.hu/en/. Note: pre-university students have a different academic calendar. Classes will be held in the heart of Budapest, on the famous Treft Campus of the, located in Múzeum krt. 4 (close to Astia station metro line 2 (red line)). Your contact at the Faculty The team of International Student Services is located in Room 308 of the Main Building (Múzeum krt. 6-8., 3rd flo, 1088 Budapest). The student s admissions officer and initial contact person at the Faculty is listed on the (Final) Letter of Acceptance. He she will be pleased to provide guidance via e-mail prearrival. (Please make sure to always indicate the file number in any e-mail communication.) Orientation and class registration The student should expect an invitation to Orientation a few weeks befe the scheduled start of the semester (start date of semester is listed above). This invitation will be send out by e-mail. The ientation will be the newly-arrived student s starting point of her her studies at the Faculty. The aim of the Orientation Program is to give the student infmation about imptant practical matters related to studying and living in Budapest. Additionally, he she will gain insight into the educational and study environment of the. We will provide the student with all the necessary infmation about practical post-arrival issues, essential to-dos with the authities, your integration in Hungary, the new study environment, as well as culture and arts in our thriving capital. During the event(s), you will also have the opptunity to meet with the leadership of the university, as well as your fellow students. After the student has gone to ientation, he she will be able to attend to all neccesary administrative tasks: e.g. registering f classes, signing applicable agreements, etc. Attendance to ientation is obligaty. Arriving late If you are unable to travel to Budapest befe the start date of the program have to miss ientation, please contact your admissions counsel right away. Enrollment in any given semester cannot be guaranteed should you arrive after registration week, therefe please make sure to arrive to Budapest on time.
Admitted Students Infmation Guide: entry visa and Residence Permit f non-eea nationals In a nutshell, to pursue a degree at ELTE University as a non-eea (European Economic Area) citizen, the student needs to obtain two documents: (1) a D-type entry visa (also known as the Residence Permit Visa) (2) a Residence Permit. The admitted student starts the visa procedure by applying f a Residence Permit f the Purpose of Studies at the Hungarian authities abroad, and if granted, is issued the entry visa. After his her arrival in Hungary, the student must register at the Office of Immigration and Nationality and pick up the Residence Permit. Please refer to the attached Residence Permit Chart f a general overview of the steps the applicant is expected to take. Imptant notice: The hereafter mentioned infmation is f the student s infmation only. Please consult with the Hungarian mission abroad f the latest infmation and requirement. The student s specific situation might call f additional requirements. Acceptance to the and tuition payment If the applicant has been conditionally accepted (the applicant received a conditional Letter of Acceptance): Once the applicant has paid the tuition fee as per the instructions on the Notification of Payment, and satisfied any of the other applicable requirements, the conditionally admitted student will be issued a Final Letter of Acceptance by e-mail. Consecutively, the student is ready to initiate the entry visa and Residence Permit procedure. The Final Letter of Acceptance will serve as proof of acceptance into the respective program f the Hungarian authities abroad. At a later point, once the payment of the tuition fee has been confirmed on the university s account, the admitted student will be issued a Confirmation of Payment: an official prove, countersigned by the financial department, that the student has paid the relevant fees. If the applicant has been accepted without conditions (the applicant was issued a regular Letter of Acceptance): The student is requested to start the entry visa and Residence Permit procedure right away. The Letter of Acceptance will serve as proof of acceptance into the respective program f the Hungarian authities abroad. The student is expected to pay the tuition fee f one semester befe the start of the semester, as per the Notification of Payment. Please note that the embassy might request the student to pay the tuition fee at a later point as part of the requirements to obtain a visa.
Other relevant infmation The hard-copy of any relevant letters will be available f the student to pick up in the office of the Department of International Affairs. Befe the accepted student arrives to Budapest, he she will be send a scanned-copy by e-mail only. In exceptional circumstances, should the Embassy of Hungary require a verified notarized copy of any letters, please ask us to send it to the embassy directly (by contacting your admission s officer). Starting the procedure by contacting the nearest Hungarian diplomatic mission It is advisable that student sets an appointment at the Embassy's consular section immediately after receiving the (Final) Letter of Acceptance. Permit at least 30 days pri to their planned trip to Hungary. Allow enough time f the procedure, which usually includes personal visits to the respective embassy and meticulous paperwk. If possible, try to schedule the interview well in advance. The procedure can easily take 3 to 4 weeks, in some cases, even longer. Please do not use any unofficial outdated website. To evade discrepancies and misunderstandings in the administrative process, you should always communicate with the Embassy via e-mail. Please do not delete any of your previous e-mail exchanges. The interview at the nearest Hungarian diplomatic mission: what to expect Consular interviews are conducted in English; therefe, you must be a basic user of the language (A2 accding to CEFR, that is, way stage elementary user). It is highly recommended that you prepare to answer questions concerning the following topics: (1) Where did you first hear about the university? (2) Do you have any friends relatives in Hungary in the Schengen Area? (3) Who will cover the expenses of your stay in Hungary? (4) If you are sponsed by someone during your studies, what is your relationship with the person in question? What does he do f a living? (5) What do you plan to do in the future after you return to your home country? (6) Why did you choose Hungary as your study destination? (7) What do you know about Hungary and ELTE University? (8) If you plan to take up a student job in Hungary, what would you do?
The interview at the nearest Hungarian diplomatic mission: what documents to submit The student will be infmed by the Hungarian embassy consulate which documents he she will be expected to submit; usually these are the documents listed below. Verify the validity of the passpt and, once in Hungary, one can proceed to the Issuing Authities to have it extended. The passpt has to be valid f at least 3 months starting from the date the student plans to arrive in Hungary. The student must always present his her valid passpt when dealing with the Hungarian authities abroad in Hungary. In certain countries where new passpt fmats have been approved, one can only travel abroad with a biometric passpt. 2 Accommodation Embassies frequently require that students should arrange their accommodation pri to their arrival in Hungary. He she should be able to produce a written confirmation that a room reservation has been made in advance, if applicable, a rental agreement has (already) been signed. Please ensure that your accommodation in Hungary is secured in advance.
Note that once the student has arrived in Hungary and picks up the Resident Permit, a me permanent living solution must be found; e.g. a rental agreement can be used to confirm this to the authities. In some cases, the embassy consulate might require the applicant to arrange housing paid up to one year in advance, befe he she travels to Hungary. Please consult with the nearest Hungarian embassy f me infmation. The university might be able to provide the student with accommodation in one of the dmities. Rooms in the university's dmities are unftunately in very high demand, and occupancy is subject to availability. If the faculty university is unable to provide accommodation, you will be expected to arrange housing yourself. F me infmation, please visit our website: http://www.btk.elte.hu/en/housing 3 Health insurance To obtain an entry visa and Residence Permit, the student is expected to have a health insurance with sufficient coverage in Hungary. The student is expected to arrange this befe coming to Hungary. We recommend that students should inquiry with the Hungarian authities what their insurance is expected to cover and what the duration should be (possibly, a minimum of one year is required). After the student has arrived in Hungary, he she may enroll in the basic insurance plan offered by the university in partnership with Generali Biztosító. If the student decides to purchase the plan offered by this provider, the costs are expected to be around 220 EUR per academic year (valid from 1 September until 31 August). This insurance plan cannot be purchased while the student is still abroad. Me infmation about the insurance options available to students can be found on the university s website: https://www.elte.hu/en/content/health-insurance.t.140. 4 Paying the tuition fee in advance If the students has been accepted by the Faculty without conditions, and did not yet pay the tuition fee when he she applies f the entry visa and Residence Permit, the authities might ask the student to pay one two semesters of the tuition fee in advance.. Please consult with the Hungarian authities whether the student is expected to pay the tuition fee befe traveling to Hungary. 5 Air ticket reservation The student must submit the ticket reservation with his her entry visa and Residence Permit application (usually it is a written confirmation received from your travel agent). Please make sure the flight dates crespond to the period you have requested a Residence Permit f. The ticket must be a return-date ticket (either an "flexible" ticket one with a fixed return-date). It is imptant to note that one-way tickets might not be accepted f visa purposes.
If your application is rejected Should it be the case that your entry visa Residence Permit application is rejected, you can file an appeal at the Consulate within 8 days after the rejection. If you have already paid the tuition fee befe arriving to Hungary, you are only eligible f a refund of the fees in case you submitted an appeal. F me infmation on the Faculty s financial regulation, please visit our website: http://www.btk.elte.hu/en/fees-finances Other relevant infmation Please do not travel to Hungary on a Schengen visa a Schengen Residence Permit issued by another Schengen country in the expectation that you can change your visa status while in Hungary. If you do this, you might be obliged to return to your home country to apply f a long-term visa, a process which can take between four to ten weeks. If you require the assistance of an agent with submitting your application to the Hungarian authities, we would be happy to provide you with the contact details of a verified agent. Please contact your admissions counsel to help you get in touch with a local representative of the Faculty. Extensions to arrive at a later date (called an extension period ) are only given under vis may circumstances (sudden illness, death of a family member, natural disasters, etc.). It lies in the right of the Faculty to accept refuse applicants requiring an extension period. The Department of International Affairs will not, under any circumstances, issue Letters of Acceptance f traveling companions, friends, family members and otherwise.
After arrival in Hungary Once the student has arrived in Hungary, he she needs to register with the Office of Immigration and Nationality and pick up the Residence Permit as soon as possible. The Residence Permit can be obtained in person, not later than 30 days befe the expiry of the student s legal stay, at the Office of Immigration and Nationality (Bevándlási és Állampolgársági Hivatal; BMBAH).
