October 17, 2016 A meeting of the Westfield School Committee was held on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 7:00 pm in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 59 Court Street. Members present by roll call were: Mr. Bill Duval, Mr. Jeffrey Gosselin, Mrs. Diane Mayhew, Mrs. Cindy Sullivan, Mr. Kevin J. Sullivan, Ramon Diaz, and Chairman Brian Sullivan. At 7:01 pm Chairman Sullivan called the meeting to order. 1. Pledge of Allegiance Chairman Sullivan asked if anyone was taping the meeting and if so, please state your name and address: none A moment of silence was held in memory of Mr. Jack Starzik, a school department employee, who recently passed away. 2. Public participation, excluding personnel: none 3. Westfield High School student representatives: Erin McDermott and Aiden Chisholm-Sluben were in attendance and updated the committee regarding recent and upcoming events. 4. South Middle School presentation: A few members of the South Middle School s Student Council were in attendance and provided an update to the committee. Mr. Baker commended the students. 5. ew Superintendent Induction Program: Mr. Kevin Courtney was in attendance and shared information regarding the ew Superintendent Induction Program (SIP). Mr. Courtney, a retired Superintendent, serves as a coach for Superintendent Czaporowski. 6. Approval of the October 3, 2016 School Committee meeting minutes: moved, seconded to approve the regular School Committee meeting minutes of October 3, 2016. All were in favor. Motion passes. abstained. 7. Approval of home school applications HE77-1617 to HE83-1617: moved, seconded to approve home school applications HE77-1617 to HE83-1617 for the 2016-2017 school year. All were in favor. Motion passes. 8. Approval of field trips: a. moved, seconded to approve the Abner Gibbs Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 1, 2016. Chairman Sullivan b. Other: Mr. Czaporowski reported that the first initial board meeting of the Business and School Task Force will be held on Friday at the Holiday Inn. He thanked Kate Phelon for her assistance with this. Mr. Czaporowski reported that Governor Charlie Baker was scheduled to visit the Aviation Program at Westfield Technical Academy on Tuesday. On ovember 15 th the Westfield Public Schools will host The Rise, Fall, and Recovery of BA Star Chris Herron. The event is free and will be held at Westfield Technical Academy at 6:30pm. 15. Mayor s update: Mayor Sullivan updated the committee. Also, he announced that Mr. Ramon Diaz was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at Barnes Air ational Guard Base in a ceremony on Sunday. 16. School Committee update: none 17.
