Africa s modern governments EQ: How do the modern governments of Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Sudan compare and contrast? (AKS #35c)

I CAN Explain the structures of the modern governments of Africa. Compare and contrast the governments of Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Sudan.

What is a Republic? Citizens elect leaders to represent them. Follows a written constitution where personal rights of citizens are guaranteed, respected, and protected they cannot be taken away!

The countries of Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Sudan have very different government systems today. Though all 4 are describedas republics, the reality is very different in each country!

Republic of Kenya

Type of Government Presidential Democracy Unicameral Legislature: National Assembly

Head of government President: Elected directly by citizens. Can only serve 2 5-year terms. Uhuru Kenyatta: Since April 9, 2013

President Uhuru Kenyatta

Who can vote? Citizens 18 years and older.

Degree of personal freedoms for citizens Written in constitution Gov t dominated by President. Seen some improvement in citizen s rights in recent years.

Year of independence December 12, 1963: From Great Britain peacefully as nationalist protests increased.

Checking For Understanding Stand Up/Sit Down If the statement below is true, STAND UP! If the statement is false, SIT DOWN! Try not to peek at your notes Kenya has a parliamentary democratic republic. Following in Nigeria s footsteps, Kenya won its independence from Great Britain through a peaceful movement.

Republic of south Africa

Type of Government Parliamentary Democracy Bicameral Legislature: National Assembly

Checking For Understanding (Face-to-Face) Your Elbow Partner If you and your partner think the statement is TRUE, face each other. If you and your partner think it s FALSE, turn your backs to each other! South Africa s president can serve three 5-year terms. The Republics of Kenya and South Africa compare in that they are both democracies. The president of South Africa is directly elected by the citizens.

Federal Republic of Nigeria

Type of Government Presidential Democracy Bicameral Legislature: National Assembly

Head of government President: Elected directly by citizens Can only serve 2 4-year terms Muhammadu Buhari: Since May 29, 2015

Year of independence October 1, 1960: From Great Britain.

Checking For Understanding (Face-to-Face) Your Elbow Partner If you think the statement is TRUE, pat the top of your head with your hand. If you think it s FALSE, rub your stomach in circles with your hand! Citizens 17 years of age and older are allowed to vote in elections in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The government of Nigeria is similar to Kenya in that citizens vote for the National Assembly that chooses the Prime Minister. The goal of Boko Haram is to take control of Nigeria s oil reserves from the Islamic government.

Republic of Sudan

Background on Bashir Number #1 on the list of worst dictators is Sudan s current president, al-bashir. Taking power in 1989, al-bashir and his regime abolished the existing government, suspended the Constitution, restricted freedom of press, and arrested prominent politicians. The citizens DID NOT vote for al-bashir; he used his military force to become dictator.

Degree of personal freedoms for citizens Numerous human rights violations: Civil War abuses Ethnic cleansing Slavery Child soldiers Very few rights unless part of National Congress Party.

Year of independence January 1, 1956: From Great Britain

Checking For Understanding (Face-to-Face) Your Elbow Partner If you think the statement is TRUE, pat the top of your head with your hand. If you think it s FALSE, rub your stomach in circles with your hand! Sudan achieved independence from France in 1956. The government of the Republic of Sudan tends to be more democratic than the government of South Africa. All four of these African countries are republics and do not allow women to vote.
