Why do I need a Visa? The purpose of applying a visa requirement to citizens of certain countries is to control who can enter and visit Denmark and the other Schengen countries. The Schengen countries normally decide cooperatively which nationalities the visa requirement will be applied to. The countries are selected with consideration to immigration and security issues, as well as political concerns. A visa is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Denmark and/or the other Schengen countries for a limited period of time. If you wish to reside in Denmark for an extended period of time, you need to apply for a residence permit. If the immigration authorities suspect that you intend to seek permanent or long-term residency in Denmark or another Schengen country without legal grounds, your visa application will be turned down. This applies for instance if you are applying for a residence permit and visa at the same time, or if you have a residence permit application pending with the Immigration Service. If you have been granted certain types of residence or re-entry permits in another Schengen country, you do not need a visa to enter Denmark. These types of residence permits are not valid for entry into the Faroe Islands or Greenland. If you hold certain types of residence permits issued by Bulgaria, Cyprus or Rumania you are permitted to travel through Denmark to the country that has issued the residence permit, but you may not stop over without reason. Your journey through Denmark may last no longer than five days. You do not need a visa to enter Denmark if you hold a residence card issued under the EU regulations on free movement, and your residence card was issued by an EU country which is also a Schengen country. If you hold an EU residence card issued by an EU country which is not a Schengen country, you can enter Denmark without a visa only if you are accompanied by, or will join, an EU citizen. This applies to both residence cards issued in accordance with Directive 2004/38/EC and residence cards issued before this directive took effect. You will receive your residence card in the form of a plastic card the size of a credit card or a residence sticker placed in your passport. Family members of an EU/EEA citizen or Swiss citizen who is exercising his/her right to free movement in Denmark, as well as family members of a Danish citizen who is exercising or who has exercised his/her right to free movement to relocate to another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, have the right to have a visa application processed in accordance with EU regulations. A decision to approve or reject a visa application is made in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Executive Order on Visas.

What does a visa entitle you to? A visa normally grants you the right to stay in the entire Schengen region. The Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. A visa grants you the right to spend a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen region. If you remain in Denmark after your visa expires or if you attempt to use your visa stay to obtain permanent or long-term residency in Denmark, you can be given a penalty period of three or five years. During the penalty period you will not be able to obtain a visa to visit Denmark. A visa does not allow you to work in Denmark unless the Immigration Service has explicitly granted you this right. However, during visits of less than 90 days you may carry out certain work-related activities without holding a work permit. Read more about how to apply for visa: https://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/visa/howto/how_to_app.htm Visas for The Faroe Islands and Greenland The Faroe Islands and Greenland are both part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but please note, that special rules apply for these two autonomous regions: If you plan on making a short-term visit (up to 90 days) to the Faroe Islands or Greenland, you must have a visa that is valid for entry into the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland, if you come from a country with a visa requirement. A visa to enter Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry into the Faroe Islands or Greenland. Neither Greenland nor the Faroe Islands are members of the EU and they are not parties to the Schengen Agreement. If you need a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland, you will most likely also need a Schengen visa, since most travel to these two countries goes through a Schengen country, such as Denmark. Citizens from visa free countries do not need a visa.

Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are free to enter, reside, study and work on the Faroe Islands and in Greenland. Conditions and application In general, if you qualify for a Danish visa, you also qualify for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland. The application procedure for visas to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland is the same as for a Danish visa. If you are seeking to obtain a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland, as well as a Schengen visa, you only need to submit a single application. Read more about applying for a visa : https://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/visa/howto/how_to_app.htm Visas to enter the Faroe Islands and Greenland are issued by Danish diplomatic missions abroad or the Danish Immigration Service. Important exceptions: A Danish/Schengen visa does not give permission to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland Residence permits, residence cards and D visas, whether issued by Denmark or another Schengen country, do not give permission to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland An ID card issued by an EU or Schengen country that is valid for entry into Denmark does not give permission to enter Greenland. Such individuals will require a passport to travel to Greenland Individuals with a visa valid only for entry to the Faroe Islands or Greenland are not required to possess travellers health insurance Holders of Danish residence permits who require a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland If you hold a Danish residence permit, but require a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland, the Immigration Service or the police can issue an entry permit. If you entered Denmark on a visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen country You must apply for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland before you arrive in Denmark. In certain cases, the Immigration Service or the police can issue a permit if you are already in Denmark. In such cases, you must declare the purpose of your visit to the Faroe Islands/Greenland, possess a ticket or other documentation for the planned trip and state why you did not apply for a visa before entering Denmark. Holders of residence permits valid for the Faroe Islands or Greenland who need a visa to travel to Denmark If you hold a residence permit valid for the Faroe Islands or Greenland, you will need a visa to enter Denmark. Such individuals do not need

supplementary travellers insurance in order to enter Denmark. Such individuals must also have a visa if they wish to travel to another Schengen country. Supplementary travellers insurance is also required, unless you have refugee status in Greenland. An application for a visa to enter Denmark or a Schengen country must be submitted to the police on the Faroe Islands or in Greenland, who will then send it to the Immigration Service. Extension In certain cases, a visa giving you permission to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland can be extended beyond the 90-day validity period. Extensions can be granted to, among others, individuals visiting a spouse, partner, fiancé(e), boyfriend, girlfriend, child, parents or siblings, or in the event of serious illness. An application to extend your visa must be submitted to the police on the Faroe Islands or in Greenland, who will then send it to the Immigration Service.
