People Cambodia is the home of the Khmer people. The Khmer have a vibrant culture and are famous for the warm hospitality they show to their guests. Surprisingly you ll find many Cambodians speak English quite well and are always eager to say hello and ask about your day! Always cheerful and rarely without a smile, the Cambodian people will be sure to make you feel welcome during your visit. Wildlife Cambodia is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including 200 species of reptile. Famous for its elephants and tigers, Cambodia is also home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, which can be found along the Mekong River and surrounding tributaries. With its numbers dwindling, catching a rare glimpse of this majestic creature is something you will never forget. Food Think of Cambodia and images of rice paddies are sure to spring to mind. YOUR ORIENTATION Day 1 After arriving at Phnom Penh International Airport, you will hop into a tuk tuk and head off to the intern house where you will meet and greet your fellow interns and settle into your new home! Day 2 Day two will begin with you hopping back into the tuk tuks and setting off on a tour of Phnom Penh! During the tour there ll be a chance to visit an ATM and pick up any essentials you may have forgotten. Upon your return to the intern house you will have a full orientation, giving you the low down on your accommodation, and also a taster lesson in the Khmer language. Day 3 You will start the day with your second lesson in Khmer and have a session covering the basics of Cambodian culture. This will cover Khmer customs, a bit of local geography and finish up with health and safety. Following this will be a session on Phnom Penh itself, giving you tips on places to explore and options for weekend trips. Day 4 Polish your Khmer language skills during a morning lesson, and then put yourself in the shoes of the students with a get to know each other session in the classroom. This will give you an insight into their experience, and provide inspiration for your lesson plans. Following this, you will be trained with all the TEFL essentials including how to teach vocabulary, games pronunciation and language in the classroom. In the afternoon, experience a full teaching orientation led by a highly experienced language teacher and supported by past interns. The previous interns will offer unique insights into their experience, and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. You will also receive your timetable, which will contain up to 4 hours teaching per day Mon-Fri. Day 5 Finish your orientation session with your final Khmer language lesson, as well as a teaching workshop along with past interns allowing you to ask any final questions and discuss the programme before you begin. YOUR TEACHING EXPERIENCE Days 7-13 - Your teaching experience Before your teaching experience begins you will take part in a 4 day culture trip with the other teachers. This will involve a visit one of the area s greatest attractions including Kratie, an amazing Cambodian culture hotspot. Days 13-81 - Your teaching experience During your teaching period you will be preparing and delivering all classes with full support from the in-country team. Your free time and weekends are free for you to use as you wish. There s so much to do, you will struggle to fit it all in! We d recommend seeing the local temples, wildlife parks and taking part in activities such as Khmer cooking classes, picnics and parties that are held during the semester. Each fortnight you will be able to discuss teaching strategies and get support at your scheduled teaching meetings. You can also continue your Khmer language training with free ongoing private or group lessons available to all interns! Day 81 Final day Your final day! Prepare for an emotional final day with your students as you celebrate the end of the semester with a class party! Student results and certificates will be handed out on this day, so make sure you bring your camera. Day 82 End of semester party After 11 weeks of teaching, it s time to let your hair down! There will be a big Thank You! party thrown for the interns and certificates will be handed out it. Day 83 Official end of the programme Sadly all good things come to an end, and Day 83 marks the official end of the programme. Today will be the day to say your goodbyes and move out of the house before heading on to your next adventure. Post Internship support will be available, offering advice on visa renewals, visas for other countries, travel advice and bookings for transport and hotels within Cambodia. Should you choose to remain in Cambodia, the in-country team will provide ongoing assistance and also encourage you to get involved in assisting the new interns beginning their life in Phnom Penh.
