1 THE SOCIETY OF ANIMAL ARTISTS MEMBER HANDBOOK PHILOSOPHY The general membership of the Society of Animal Artists is made up of its Artist Members who control and participate in its functions and goals. The Society, a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, seeks to promote and foster animal and wildlife art, and, by maintaining the highest standards of artistic excellence and developing the highest levels of artistic achievement, strives for the recognition of this art as an important contemporary art form. The emphasis of the Society is on fine art rather than illustrative or commercial art. The goal of the Society of Animal Artists is to share, through the medium of art, its members' knowledge and understanding of animals and their interpretations of the natural world. It is also the intent of the Society to bring together artists working in various mediums interested in animals in art, to offer them the opportunity to exhibit work in an annual juried show, and to exhibit in invitational group shows at galleries and museums throughout the country. OUR BEGINNINGS The Society of Animal Artists was founded in 1960 by the artists Patricia Allen Bott and Guido Borghi. It was organized as the result of the enthusiastic response given to a show entitled "Animals in the Bronx Zoo" sponsored by the New York Zoological Society. The show was held at the Burr Gallery in New York. The first president was the late Elizabeth Rungius Fulda, and the eminent artist, Paul Bransom, served as the second president. The charter members were: John Clymer, Gifford Cochran, Brenda Frey, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Gertrude K. Lathrop, Robert Lougheed, Ugo Mochi, Clement Weisbecker and Walter Wilwerding. The Catasus, logo of the Society of Animal Artists, depicts a winged cat reaching for a star. Paul Bransom created the logo to symbolize the striving for artistic perfection. And, as artistic perfection can never be attained, the cat never quite reaches the star. As a tribute to Paul Bransom, co-founder Patricia Allen Bott arranged with the National Star Registry to name an actual star, "Catasus". Star number: Hydra l0h 20M 1940 has been so re-designated and will retain the title, "Catasus" in perpetuity. 2 EXHIBITIONS Society members have the opportunity to participate in the SAA s ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION which is held in various museums and important exhibition venues across the country in the fall of each year. Select works are chosen from this premiere exhibition for a NATIONAL TOUR of museums and cultural institutions. The Society may also mount REGIONAL EXHIBITIONS and SALES SHOWS at various public institutions and art galleries. All Society exhibitions are juried from work submitted by member artists. ANNUAL EXHIBITION - "ART AND THE ANIMAL" The Society's Annual Exhibition has become one of the most important contemporary exhibits of animal art in the United States. It is seen by tens of thousands of viewers each year and attracts media attention across the country. The show usually includes 120 to 150 works of art, depending on the size of the venue. One work per artist may be accepted into the exhibition. Exhibited art may or may not be for sale, at the discretion of the artist. Generally, the entry deadline for submissions to the Annual Exhibition is the middle of April. Specific dates are provided in the Prospectus, which is sent with an Entry Form to all SAA members by early February of each year. Members may enter up to two works. Work submitted for the Annual Exhibition must not have been exhibited at any previous Society Annual Exhibition. While there is no restriction on other prior exposure of the work, the art must have been completed in the current or previous 5 years (see Jury Section for more details). The Membership Jury Committee (see Committees Section for a definition) selects the artwork for the Annual Exhibition approximately 3 weeks following the entry deadline. The Committee consists of 9 Signature Members. Detailed information, including important exhibition and opening weekend dates, for each Annual Exhibit will be included in the Prospectus which is sent to all current artist members. THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION CATALOG is a full-color, completely illustrated record of the Society's annual juried exhibition of "Art and the Animal". This publication, distributed internationally, has come to be recognized as a major chronicle of the current important works being created in the field of animal and wildlife art. The catalog includes a full page of the artwork, commentary and biographical information for each of the artists exhibiting in the annual show. The catalog is distributed to the membership at no cost. Members who have had artwork juried into 15 or more Annual Exhibitions are awarded the designation of DISTINGUISHED SIGNATURE MEMBER and are highlighted in the Annual Exhibition Catalog. ANNUAL EXHIBITION AWARDS Since 1979 the Society of Animal Artists has presented its coveted AWARD OF EXCELLENCE to those works of art in Society Annual Exhibitions judged to represent the highest standards of artistic excellence. Designed by the late noted sculptor, Donald R. Miller, from Paul Bransom s Catasus logo, these bronze medals are the most important artistic awards bestowed by the Society. The winners are selected each year by a prestigious panel of judges chosen from art and civic communities across the nation. The award judges are normally selected by the Annual Exhibition opening venue with the Society of Animal Artists Member Handbook Revised 09/2016 Page 2

3 approval of the Society. Recipients of the Award receive an engraved bronze medallion and a Society certificate. The Awards of Excellence are presented without distinction between the types of art or medium, and there is no ranking such as First Place, etc. They are intended, instead, to recognize outstanding artistic effort. Up to 8 Awards of Excellence can be awarded at each Annual Exhibition. Because the Award of Excellence is given for specific works of art each year, there is no restriction as to the number of times an artist may win it. When a member receives their 5 th Award of Excellence, they are automatically awarded the title of MASTER SIGNATURE MEMBER. Master Signature Members may enter artwork into the Annual Exhibition without jurying and are highlighted in the Annual Exhibition Catalog. Sponsored Prizes are also offered each year and are awarded independently of the Award of Excellence. These are presented for specific categories. Recipients receive a cash award or other prize and a Society certificate. The number and type of sponsored awards vary from year to year. ANNUAL EXHIBITION OPENING WEEKEND In conjunction with the opening of the Annual Exhibition, the SAA sponsors a weekend of activities, including, but not limited to, the Annual Membership Meeting, Artists Reception, Awards Banquet, and several member activities, presentations and educational programs. The number of activities is influenced by the location of the opening venue. All SAA members and Patrons are not charged for most weekend activities. Members will be responsible for those activities that are an extra cost to the SAA (e.g. zoo entry fees, special presentations, tours, etc.). Each member may invite one guest to attend the opening weekend. There may be a small charge for the guest to help offset higher costs. ALL SAA members are invited and encouraged to attend the opening weekend regardless whether they have a piece in the Annual Exhibition or not. The opening weekend activities may be held one or more weeks after the actual opening of the Exhibition. NATIONAL TOUR The National Tour is a traveling exhibit of works chosen from the Annual Exhibition. Each Tour incorporates 3 to 4 venues which include art museums, natural history museums, and other cultural institutions. Approximately sixty artworks are selected from the Annual Show for the Tour by the EXHIBITION COMMITTEE. Artists are notified of their selection for the tour prior to the closing date of the Annual Exhibition. Artwork accepted for the initial exhibit does not have to be available for the Tour, but it is highly recommended. Artwork may not be removed from the Tour until its completion. Generally, 45 flat works and 15 sculptures are chosen to travel. The determination of tour selections is influenced by several factors, including: the portability and fragility of the art, the balance of art styles, media and subject matter. Patron and Sponsor Member dues are paid annually. There is one Patron member category and three Sponsor member categories: Patron Member $ Sponsoring Member $ Sustaining Sponsoring Member $1, Partner Sponsoring Member $5, JURYING GUIDELINES FOR JURYING All Society jury members are practicing animal artists who attempt, as objectively as possible, to apply certain accepted parameters in their choice of artwork for the shows and in choosing new members for the Society. In general, these are the basic considerations that the jurors have developed over the years to help with the deliberations that occur during the jurying sessions Does the work have a creative or effective composition and abstract/ graphic design? Does the artist demonstrate a thorough understanding of the depicted species anatomy, behavior, and natural environment? Does the artist display a mastery of the medium or material? Is there a demonstrated mastery in the use of light? Form? Space? Composition? Gesture? Is there something about the artwork that is special and not just an average depiction of an animal? Professional quality images enhance the artwork; poorly photographed works frequently compromise the chances of acceptance. Improper presentation of the prospective material makes it difficult for the jury to assess the artwork and may not allow for proper consideration by the jury. Only digital images will be acceptable for jurying. Artwork which is accepted for a Society exhibition should reinforce the Society's objectives of fostering and developing animal art as a contemporary fine art form and should support the "spirit" of Society exhibitions." The SAA reserves the right to exclude from any show artwork submitted and previously accepted by the jury if the original art does not meet the standards reasonably expected from the images submitted to the jury. Notification of this regulation is to be prominently included in the prospectus. Society of Animal Artists Member Handbook Revised 09/2016 Page 9

10 THE JURY PROCESS FOR THE NEW MEMBER JURY The New Member jury is held during the Spring and Fall Executive Board meetings. The jury consists of those Board members present (non-artist board members do not vote). The jurors are given a form containing the applicants name and all pertinent information about all five submitted images. The five images are projected on a large screen one at a time, then a second time. Jurors discuss the artwork and can ask that specific images be shown again. At the conclusion of the discussion, a hand-vote is taken. The jurors are asked to vote for Signature status. If the applicant does not receive a two-thirds vote, the jurors are asked to vote for Associate status. If the applicant does not receive a two-thirds vote, the jurors are asked to vote for Resubmission. If the applicant does not receive a two-thirds vote, the applicant is rejected. If the applicant will be asked to resubmit, the jurors are asked to provide comments on the artwork for a critique that will be sent to the applicant. No juror comments are sent to those who were rejected. There are no minimum or maximum number of Signature or Associate members that can be juried into the Society. FOR THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION JURY The Annual Exhibition jury is selected by the Membership Jury Chairperson each year. The jury consists of nine Signature members, with an alternate juror. The jury is held in late April or early May. The jury process is completely anonymous. Entries are received by the Executive Director and loaded into a spreadsheet. Once all of the entries are received, a random generated number is assigned to each member and all signatures and identifying marks are removed from the images. Jurors are given a form with ONLY the pertinent information about the artwork - the member is only identified by a number. The artwork image is projected on a large screen. 2D images are voted on first, then 3D images. NO comments or discussion are allowed at any time during the jury process. A cup is passed from juror to juror. Each juror has black and white marbles. They put a white marble in the cup for a yes vote and a black marble for a no vote. The President (who cannot vote) collects the cup and counts the number of white marbles and announces the vote to the jury. An artwork receiving six or more votes is in the Exhibition. An artwork receiving five votes is identified as a maybe. If there are not enough pieces receiving six or more votes to fill the exhibition (2D and 3D are treated separately), the jury reconsiders the maybe s those pieces that received five yes votes to fill out the exhibition. If there are more pieces receiving six or more votes than can fit in the exhibition, the jurors must reconsider those pieces receiving six votes to reduce the number of 2D or 3D pieces to the target number for the exhibition. Once the exhibition is selected, the images are shown to the jurors at which time the artists are identified. If a member submits two pieces for the exhibition, they are shown back-to-back. The first piece is shown to the jurors who vote on it. Then the second image is shown and identified as a second piece for that member (pieces are identified by a number only, Ex: 29 A and 29 B). The jurors are instructed to treat each piece on its own merits and not pick which one they like best. The piece receiving the most yes votes (if 6 or more) is in the exhibition. If both pieces receive the same number of yes votes (both 6 or more), both pieces are presented to the jurors at the end of the first vote. The jurors are allowed to comment on the pieces and then do a hand vote to select which piece they want in the exhibition. The results of the jury are ed to all those who entered. Those selected will receive attachments with instructions and forms that need to be returned to the SAA office. Those not selected will receive an thanking them for their submission. Since no artwork was discussed during the jury, there will be no comments about why the artwork was not selected. Society of Animal Artists Member Handbook Revised 09/2016 Page 10

11 FOR NON-ANNUAL EXHIBITION SHOW JURY The Membership Jury Chairperson selects the jurors for all non-annual Exhibition shows. It is expected that in certain instances, the organizations (museums, galleries, etc.) which host SAA shows may be given a role in the final selection of artwork which will be included in a show (other than the Annual Exhibition). In all cases, the jury will consist of at least 5 jurors; a majority of the jurors will be Society Signature members. The Jury Chairperson will determine the number of entries allowed per member. The number of pieces selected is determined by the venue and may allow more than one piece per member depending on the type of show, the size of the venue and the number of entries received. Entries are received by the Executive Director and loaded into a spreadsheet. Artist s names are known to the jurors during the jury process unless the Jury Chairperson determines the jury should be done anonymously. Jurors are sent a form with the artists names and pertinent information about the artwork and a ballot form. The images are uploaded to Dropbox and a link is sent to the jurors. The jurors complete their ballot form and return it to the Executive Director who tallies the votes. Those pieces receiving the highest number of votes will be selected, with attention given to how many each member may have in the show. The results of the jury are ed to all those who entered. Those selected will receive attachments with instructions and forms that need to be returned to the SAA office. Those not selected will receive an thanking them for their submission. Since no artwork was discussed during the jury, there will be no comments about why the artwork was not selected. GENERAL EXHIBITION AND SHOW INFORMATION About six months prior to any exhibition or show, all eligible SAA members will be sent an Entry Form and Prospectus describing the show venue and requesting entry submissions. Only members who are current with their dues may enter. For the Annual Exhibition, each member may enter one or two pieces, but no member will have more than one piece selected. For other shows, the number of entries and pieces selected for each member will be determined by the Membership Jury Chairperson. The Annual Exhibition is open to all eligible members; however, other shows may be limited to a regional area or to Signature members only. At the time of a member's acceptance in a Show or an Annual Exhibition the artist will be ed instructions and forms for the show. All information submitted with the entry form (Artist information, artwork details, price, etc.) will be sent to the artists for verification and corrections.
