Review of June meeting minutes No corrections. Motion to approve June 2009 IaSRC meeting minutes by Mike Duytschaver, 2 nd Randy Gorres. Motion carried. President Report Gary Smith IaSRC not interested in signing our name to the Coal issue as asked. Sleep and RC profession has called a truce regarding those working in sleep studies. Neither party will exclude the other from working in sleep labs. Spoke at the Mary Greeley RC conference in October. Formal Thank you to Mary and Tammy for the ventilator surveys and the receipt of 5 complimentary AARC memberships to the Conference in December. New Address! IaSRC PO Box 8454, Des Moines, IA for a cost of $30/year. Fee will be due again in December of AARC membership check arrived and given to treasurer for deposit. Signed agreement for revenue sharing. So far the IaSRC received $8.70 for someone signing up for Asthma Educator course. Past President Report Julie Jackson There is now a swap shop for adult acute care on AARC membership for exchange and review of facility protocols (managers specialty).
2 Website updates are falling behind. It will be updated. Lung Conference 2010 dates will be posted next week on the website. President Elect Report Randy Gorres Working on goals for 2010 and would like ideas and input. Working on the assignments for committees for 2010 and would also like ideas and input (and volunteers). Potential licensure issues are something that we need to plan and formulate our ideas on how we are going to address any of these that arise. This includes monitoring any that arise and how to deal with those that are proposed. Recognition of our professionals for the work they do and the patients they benefit is something he would like to work on, both internally and to the public. Making all of the RT s aware of the larger world around us in terms of the importance of being politically active at our local and state level. All RT s in Iowa need to get to know their local state reps and Senators as well as get established a communication mechanism to the folks in Washington. If this is not done then consequences need to be accepted. District Director Reports: District 1 Patty DeKock via Cindy Duncan Mercy Medical Center conference in Sioux City was poorly attended with only 34 attendees. District 2 Tammy Riedell None District 3 Jamie Bute o Made a distribution list with s for the therapists in district 3. Now has over 50 contacts. District 4 Mike Duytschaver o UIHC Seminar well attended in Iowa City in October.
3 o Presented information about the in-home asthma educators program in Lynn County. Many wanted more information and recommended this as a possibility for a Lung Conference speaker. District 5 Leann Hartman District 6 John Petsche Director at Large Reports- Jim Diehl Mary Greeley conference was well attended in October. AARC House of Delegates Report- Mary Tyrrel / Tammy Jarnagin Handout/Attachment Resolutions: o Handout/Attachment o Voted to support the retired RT resolution o Voted to allow Tammy and Mary the final judgment call once the final resolution was submitted on the issue with collaboration with states. Committee Reports: PACT Judicial / Bylaws Health Literacy Public Relations Julie Jackson o Website needs updated and more information, which will be done in the near future. Suggested hiring the website firm to do the updates so we can keep up With all volunteers on the board, it s hard to find time to keep the website current. Membership Bob Dickerson o Membership graph handout, net increase in members by over 60 including students. Great numbers! Lung Conference Gary Smith o In need of a theme for the 2010 Lung Conference o Keynote speakers are confirmed; Toni Rodriquez and Ken Thigpen. o IaSRC BOD is in favor of a 2-day format for the Lung Conference Publications Julie Jackson o Bronchoscope is struggling for submissions. Julie Jackson and Larry Barrett are looking for new ideas. o Julie hopes to get working on the website again soon. ALA Report- Janelle Their o Handout Programs o Tobacco Prevention o Freedom From Smoking Hy-Vee Pharmacy staff are attending the FFS class so they can go back to their store locations and hold a FFS class for their employees The schedule for FFS Facilitator training is being finalized. Classes will be held in Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines and Dubuque. o COPD Programs Attended a COPD capacity building training in MN last month The ALA in Iowa received a $7,000 grant from BI for COPD Data collection and evaluation. The ALA in Iowa received a grant from National Lung, Heart, and Blood Institute to host a COPD Network meeting in spring to review the information collected and determine the next steps for COPD in Iowa. o Support Groups The ALA is updating their information for the current listing of Better Breathers Support Groups across the state. The ALA will maintain regular communication with the support groups. The ALA hopes to increase the number of support groups throughout the state
5 A survey will be sent to all Pulmonary Rehabs to inquire if they currently have a support group. There will be a facilitation packet sent to all current support groups o Asthma Adventure Camp Camp will be held July 11 th July 17 th The ALA s attorney is reviewing all camp contracts H1N1 will remain a concern for camps A camp committee is working on developing procedures for H1N1 A volunteer camp planning committee is currently being recruited We need to raise enough money to cover the cost of camp through grants/foundations/individual donors o Asthma Program Funding The Iowa Department of Public Health was not awarded the Asthma grant this year from CDC The Iowa Department of Public Health verbally said they would extend our agreement through May to expand our School Nurse Asthma Action plan mailing and tie up loose ends. The Iowa Department of Public Health asked the ALA to submit a proposal to develop a 5 year statewide Asthma Plan. The contract is still going through final stages. We asked for $35,000. Development o Lung Walk-Oct. 3-Blank Park Zoo Over $36,000 gross was raised. We doubled the money raised but fell short of our $50,000 goal. 34 teams registered online New sponsors included: Waste Management, Wellmark BCBC and Iowa Soybean Association Over 300 people attended the walk Harold Wimmer, ALA of Upper Midwest CEO, attended the walk and addressed the group o Power Climb Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 We have a new name, marketing materials Fight for Air Climb Our website is The ALA had a booth at the DSM Marathon Public Policy o ALA 2010 Advocacy Priorities Maintain the Tobacco Prevention Funding Maintain the Smoke Free Air Act o Lobby Day, February 11, 2010 Jerry Mathers from Leave it to Beaver and spokesperson for the Partnership for Prescription Assistance kicked off their tour through Iowa at the ALA office on Monday, Oct. 12 th. It was a great media event for the ALA.
6 Lobbyist Report- Budget went from 6 billion to 5.5 billion. Will continue to hear more and more about cuts. Push to cut legislative days to 80 days in an effort to cut costs. Matt and partner would be willing to provide a lobbying 101 presentation. Healthcare reform bill will be adjusted and evolve over the next 5-10 years. Sleep Labs. Clarification that RC does not want to exclude sleep techs and sleep techs agreed not to exclude RC from being employed in the sleep labs. Medical Director- Dr. Hansen None Old Business A safety deposit box has not been secured yet. New Business Scholarships Attachments: Proposals for RRT reimbursement guidelines and Grant Guidelines presented. A committee was formed to carry this through. Attachments: 2009 and 2010 IaSRC Presidents Gary Smith and Randy Gorres agreed to send a letter of congratulations to RC graduates in the state. Education Committee includes Mike Duytschaver (Chair), Tammy Jarnagin and Bob Dickerson. International Fellows Tammy asking for $400 additional money for this year for the international fellows. Jim made a motion to pay an additional $400 to the AARC, 2 nd Julie, Motion carried. Julie asked if there is interest in having an international fellow. Group agreed yes and would partner with DMACC as they would provide the housing fee of cost. Hopeful visiting sites include UIHC, Mercy DSM, and Methodist, to name a few.
