Relevance: The U.S. economy experienced unprecedented growth during the late 20 th century due to rapid technological and scientific advances. The advent of computers and the internet were the catalysts for technological change transforming the ways in which information was shared, communication, and the ways in which average citizens shop and spend money. It allowed for the rise of companies such as Apple and Dell and later Amazon and Ebay. The invention and popularity in cell phones also transformed communication. TNSS: US. 104 Conservatism brings Ronald Reagan and George Bush to the presidency, America s policies, society and economy would change the world. Relevance: Conservatism reached a high point during the 1980s, underscoring social issues that hampered progress. TNSS: US. 105 Changes in the communist nations and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 brought an end to the Cold War. Relevance: The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991 and democratic reforms brought about new leaders. TNSS: US. 105 How did the internet change business, communication, and education in America? What were the significant events of the Reagan administration that brought about changes in America s social and economic climate? Identify and analyze the causes of the changes in the Communists nations that ended the Cold War? Conservative vs. Liberal Political Cartoon Analysis War Powers Act In this activity, students will examine some of the points outlined in the War Powers Act, and Reagan s use of the Act after the coup in Grenada. War Power s Report on Grenada This activity works with the War Powers Act activity above because it is the primary sources of the events discuss in that activity. Have the students debate the pros and cons of the new technologies of the 80s and 90s. Students will need to support their positions with specific inventions from research conducted. 1. (C, E, H, P) With the conclusion of the Conservative Tide came the rise of Democrat Bill Clinton. Relevance: When Bill Clinton was elected President in 1992, he promised to provide the most ethical administration in history. Due to the bitter partisanship that dominated Washington D.C. during his two terms, and to his personal flaws, he became the most investigated President in history. In the second impeachment trial of a U.S. President, the prosecutors failed to convince two-thirds of the Senate that Clinton was guilty of high Crimes or Misdemeanors. Clinton s Impeachment In this lesson, students will read about Clinton s administration, and the court case. They will then partake in with small group or whole class discussion by responding to the following questions: 1. What was the issue at the heart of the impeachment charges against President Clinton? 2. Is lying about an illicit extra-marital relationship a high Crime or Misdemeanor? Is lying under oath a high Crime or Misdemeanor? 3. Was Clinton guilty of high Crimes or Misdemeanors? 4. Was Clinton impeached mostly for constitutional reasons or mostly for political reasons? 1. Bush, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and continuing efforts to combat terrorism globally. (E, G, H, P) The 2000 election between George W. Bush and Albert Gore set imperative precents for future elections. Relevance: The Presidential election of 2000, between major party candidates Governor George W. Bush of Texas and Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee, was one of the closest in our history. This elesson focuses on the events leading up to the Supreme Court ruling by which the election was decided, and the constitutional reasoning of that decision. Gore In this lesson, students will read about the court case which determined the winner of the 2000 presidential election. They will then partake in with small group or whole class discussion by responding to the following questions: 1. Who were the two major party candidates in the presidential election of 2000? Why was the Florida result critical to the outcome of the election? 2. What was the Florida Supreme Court s reasoning for ordering a state-wide manual recount? 3. Why did Bush ask the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the state-wide manual recount? 4. What was Gore s argument for allowing it to continue? 5. Do you believe the U.S. Supreme Court ruled correctly? Online Jeopardy This resource allows teachers to create subject specific games of jeopardy, which could be played in class or students can access and play at home. It is a good study tool. Quizlet/Study Blue These resources allow you to create decks of flashcards, which can be downloaded any studied and shared on a computer, smart phone, or tablet. Both provide several different ways to study the material.
