4 Election Guide 2 early debates Republicans have already held four major party-sanctioned debates (in Cleveland, OH, Simi Valley, CA, Boulder, CO, and Milwaukee, WI) and the Democrats have had two. With each party holding two additional debates prior to the pivotal Iowa Caucuses, the candidates will try to distinguish themselves and expand their natural bases as the field narrows. Each of these debates is held in an early primary voting state Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Iowa. FIRST DAY TO CIRCULATE NOMINATIoN PETITIONS IN PENNSYLVANIA, January 26, is the first day for candidates for President or Delegate to either of the two National Conventions to circulate nomination petitions.

Voters cast ballots in the first-in-the-nation Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primary. With South Carolina and Nevada following close behind, the field is likely to narrow significantly as the results roll in. LAST DAY TO FILE NOMINATION PETITIONS IN PENNSYLVANIA, February 16, is the last day for candidates for President of the United States or Delegate or Alternate Delegate to the National Conventions of both parties to file nomination petitions.

Primaries held prior to March 15 result in delegates being awarded proportionately to the top finishers. This allows multiple candidates to increase their delegate counts early in the process. 12 Election Guide 10 winner-take-all Beginning on March 15, states can award Delegates on a winner-take-all basis. Florida has the largest bloc of delegates to be elected under this rule on March 15. The Florida GOP Primary shapes up as a potential showdown between former Governor Jeb Bush and his former protégé, Senator Marco Rubio. Ohio, another state with a large number of delegates, also votes on March 15 and is the home of Governor John Kasich. In April, the colonial primaries deliver huge blocs of delegates with New York voting on the 19 and Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island a week later. By the end of the month nearly 75 percent of the Delegates will have been selected.
