6 Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 Book Discussion: Eleanor and Hick: The Love Affair That Shaped a First Lady by Susan Quinn Susan Quinn s intimate account of Eleanor Roosevelt and her relationship with reporter Lorena Hickok a relationship that, over more than three decades, transformed both women's lives and empowered them to play significant roles in one of the most tumultuous periods in American history was chosen for our book discussion meeting on February 20. Those members who have already read it, or who are reading it now have been very impressed. Please plan to join us for this meeting at the Levittown Library on February 20, at 3:30 pm. Getting to Know One of Our New State Senators As a result of the November elections, there will be some changes among the state legislative representatives in our local districts. Members have begun meeting with these new legislators to introduce them to The League, and for us to learn about their priorities. Dania Smith reported that she and Barbara Epstein met with Senator-Elect Kevin Thomas and his chief of staff, Donna Lee, on December 17 th. As Chair of the Consumer Protection Committee, Senator Thomas priorities will include issues regarding student loans and sub-prime mortgages. He plans to introduce a Consumer Privacy Bill to address abusive practices by Facebook. Dania and Barbara shared League priorities with the Senator-Elect and left League materials that he can have available to his constituents. He will be sworn in on January 5 th at Hempstead High School and will have an office in Uniondale. Don t Miss RBG To mark the 46th anniversary of the landmark decision that legalized abortion in the United States, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County will be hosting a film screening of "RBG," the criticallyacclaimed documentary about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg's life followed by an exciting panel discussion. We have been officially invited to this Roe v. Wade anniversary event on Thursday, January 24 th, at 7:30 pm, at the Bellmore Movie Theatre. We know that the future of Roe v. Wade and the right to safe and legal abortion care is currently at risk of being gutted or overturned. Next year will be a pivotal time in the struggle to preserve, protect and defend reproductive health care in New York and across the country.
