Role of research funding agencies in the enforcement of Research Integrity Paulo S. L. Beirão November 25 th, 2013
Founded in May 2012 aiming at fostering international cooperation of Research Funding Agencies and Global Science governance. First topic discussed Merit Review Second topic Research Integrity Ongoing discussion Open Access
Why should the Funding Agencies be so concerned with Research Integrity? The Responsible Conduct of Research is at the very essence of the scientific enterprise and is intrinsic to society s trust in science.
Other aspects to be considered Credibility of Science (errors may happen) Cost of self-correction (economic cost and expenditure of time and human efforts) Good use of research money
In a competitive environment, traits that give comparative advantage tend to prevail. Charles Darwin Similarly, breaches of integrity that unfairly favor the wrongdoer, if not opposed, eventually will be encouraged.
While researchers and institutions themselves remain ultimately responsible for undertaking research with integrity, research funding agencies have an obligation to ensure that the research they support is conducted in accordance with the highest standards possible.
What role should be played by the Funding Agencies to enforce research integrity?
