1 Promoting Fundamental British Values

2 Fundamental British Values Democracy: an understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process. Rule of law: an appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens. Individual liberty: providing pupils with the opportunity to learn how to argue and defend points of view. Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith: an acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behavior.

3 Why are fundamental British values important?

4 Evidencing Fundamental British Values: Lessons Include in suitable parts of the curriculum - as appropriate for the age of pupils - material on the strengths, advantages and disadvantages of democracy, and how democracy and the law works in Britain, in contrast to other forms of government in other countries. This means that you are not expected to shoehorn in these values where they are not relevant, but that in certain subjects (e.g. Government & Politics and Law), students are encouraged to critically engage with these topics. Ensure all pupils within the school have a voice that is listened to. The promotion of British values can be observed through the behavior and atmosphere of a classroom. By all learners actively participating and feeling that they are listened to (democracy), showing respect for the opinions of others (mutual respect), and being able to voice their opinions (individual liberty) within the safe confines ensured by following the rules of the classroom (rule of law).

5 Evidencing Fundamental British Values: Tutorials The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, Lord Nash explained that, A key part of our plan for education is to ensure children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background. This ensures young people understand the importance of respect and leave school fully prepared for life in modern Britain. Tutorials offer a great opportunity for all students, regardless of subjects studied, to learn about their role and rights as citizens. Some topics already covered at JCC include: An overview of the British Values and their importance Election manifestos (leading up to the general election) Emotional abuse and healthy relationship advice (this links to rule of law) Opportunities could also be taken to discuss issues such as: The difference between religious and British laws How democracy and the law works in Britain, in contrast to other forms of government in other countries

6 Evidencing Fundamental British Values: Extra curricular Consider the role of extra-curricular activity, including any run directly by pupils, in promoting fundamental British values: Clubs and societies already included in JCC Extra include: Humanities Society (Mutual Respect) Amnesty International (Individual Liberty) Debate Society (Democracy/Individual Liberty) Legal Society (Rule of law) Model United Nations (Democracy) Interfaith Society (Mutual Respect)

9 Democracy Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor, presenting Parsa Ahmed with the Policy Competition award I won an award for the policy competition held in college for Citizenship Week as I received the highest number of votes for my policy which stated that 'Homeless people should receive free sanitary products in the UK.' Citizenship Week gave me an opportunity to see the Fundamental British Values in action and it was enlightening as the policy competition allowed me to be a part of democracy and it allowed my voice to be heard as a British Citizen. - Parsa Ahmed

10 Rule of Law Tania Bassett, from NAPO (the trade union for probation services), speaking on Women in the Criminal Justice System The talk on women in the criminal justice system was my favourite part of Citizenship Week. I found it particularly interesting when Tania was discussing how female criminals are either seen as mad, bad or sad. I bought the book that she talked about when I went home and it even got me thinking about the possibility of working in the probation system in the future. - Taha Mekdad

11 Individual Liberty Amnesty International Society has helped me to gain an awareness of the plight of others around the world. 12 Mutual Respect Dr. Geraldine O Gara, Humanist minister I didn t have any idea what Humanism was until I went to this session. We got taught quite a lot about religion at school but nothing about the alternative or secular views. It was fascinating hearing from someone who used to be a Catholic and being able to ask her questions about her beliefs and views. I asked Geraldine a question about how she makes moral decisions without religion and found her answer really interesting. - Younis Iqbal
