6 About Us About Us: Locating the developmental anomaly in structural causes such as control/ownership of and access to resources; economic, political and social structures; ideological factors (habits, beliefs, cultural preferences); and insufficient awareness and knowledge; SSVK stands committed to the effective empowerment of the marginalised people. It lays a strategic focus on the element of local action, treating it as an essential part of the development process involving changes, most important of which is, in the attitude and action of the marginalised who become participants in the process itself. Rural development is viewed as a complex process involving continuous reorientation and adaptation of traditional values, practices and institutions in order to facilitate appropriate interventions/technologies to enhance quality of life and welfare, and the consequent bargaining /negotiating powers, of the disenfranchised and the disempowered. Dalit Intervention: Dalits constitute nearly 15 percent of Bihar's population of 83 million. The poorest Dalits were declared Maha Dalits in Bihar. A government commission has identified 21 of the 22 Dalit sub castes, including Musahar, Bhuiyan, Dom, and Nat as Maha Dalits. They constitute 31 percent of the Dalit population in the state. Our organisation envisions the establishment of an egalitarian society devoid of any kind of discrimination and exploitation based on caste, class, gender, race or religion: a society that would permit the collective flowering of human potential for humane ends and to make them able to mitigate disaster with equity and dignity. Key interventions of SSVK in disaster: Disaster risk management has been one of the defining paradigms for all the developmental initiatives of SSVK in its operational area. Key interventions comprise the following: Emergency relief operations involving provision of food, safe drinking water and temporary shelters, extension of medical assistance and provision of boats for facilitating movement of the marooned Rehabilitative efforts involving reconstruction of damaged settlements and restoration of livelihoods Diversification of livelihood support base Strengthening community level coping mechanisms through organisation building and institutional development and promotion of grain banks and contingency fund reserves (gram kosh) amidst affected communities Building community capacities to act as first responders in the event of floods/ fire and cyclone. Networking with all relevant stakeholders around a shared perspective, towards addressing the issue of Bihar floods at all the levels of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Advocacy centred initiatives geared towards addressing the root causes of the flooding problem, galvanizing state response and inclusion of the most marginalized in the relief and recovery operations initiated by the various stakeholders most importantly the government.
7 SSVK Intervention in fire and cyclone 2010: In the event of fire on 6th april 2010 in Behra village under the block of Madhepur block of Madhubani district in bihar ssvk immediately started relief camp with cooked food, installation of hand pump and distributed polethin sheets for temporary shelter. Khushi a ngo of vetran cricketer mr. kapildev and All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) come forward with ssvk to support for fire victims. Hundred people were injured and over 1100 bamboo thatched houses gutted in a fire that broke out in (Darah 700 huts within 2 kosi river embankment) and (Behra 400 huts inside kamala embankment) village of Madhepur block of Bihar's Madhubani on 6th April The fire caused by a spark from an mud oven soon engulffed the all hamlets fanned by stormy winds. The flames had spread in other houses in the neighborhood forcing people to evacuate their huts. No fire vehicles and bihar govt.relief reached yet in this remote village.over 8000 seven thousand peoples including childrens and womens are homeless in bihar 42 degree hot temperature and sun ray. SSVK and its people,s organization Lok Shakti Sangathan 50 volunteers reached on spot and helping them.. We disaster response team has assessed the situation and started the 3 relief camps in 2 affected vollages Dareh and Behra of Madhubani District from 8th April Given this context, Samajik Shaikshanik Vikas Kendra (SSVK), in light of its 25 years of experience in running relief and rehabilitation programmes, has prioritized for itself the need to intervene in the affected districts. We, at SSVK and it,s people,s organization Lok Shakti Sangathan have had a long standing organizational presence in the affected district. In this hour of crisis, we look upon the need of our intervention as a moral imperative. Taj Public Service Welfare Trust supported ssvk for Fire Victimes in five sector like Health,Women & Child, Livelihood, Education and Self Sustainability. SSVK tried to take volunteers support from NSS but last 45 days bihar college,s teacher are on strike so it could not be possible to take help from NSS. So SSVK engage volunteers for fast relief of fire victims.
