3 Cooperatives in Thailand

4 The first cooperative was established in 1916 as village credit cooperative. The first Act was promulgated in 1925 and was amended many times.

5 There are only one Cooperative Society Act for all types of cooperatives. The present Cooperative Act B.E.2542 (1999) has been in force since April 12,1999. There are 7 types of cooperatives in Thailand

6 According to Cooperative Act B.E (1999) and Ministerial Regulation, the Cooperatives in Thailand are divided into 7 categories as follows: Agricultural Fishery Thrift&Credit Land Settlement Consumer Service Credit Union

11 Constitution Law B.E (2007) According to the Constitution Law B.E (2007), Section 83 (8), the Government has duties to encourage the self-reliance upon cooperatives, protect the cooperative system and encourage people to form the cooperatives in order to jointly conduct economic affairs.

12 Role of Government in Cooperative Development The government has set up a guideline for development of cooperatives in the National Economic and Social Development Plan since the First Plan from 1962 up to the present plan the Tenth Plan ( ) 2011)

14 Government supporting system The cooperative movement in Thailand is regarded as an important factor for economic and social development, especially in the rural sector, Hence, its activities receive both technical and financial support from the government.

15 Support from the government The important development schemes among others, are the establishment of central markets for agricultural products. At present, the government s s economic policy will based on the philosophy of Sufficiency Economy, this means making use of moral principles to lead economic development under the free market system.

18 Like those of other countries in Asia, cooperatives in Thailand, especially agricultural cooperatives are now confronting new emerging needs and challenges from farmer-member member and markets caused by national and global changes in the 21 st century.

19 Members want not only to sell their products as fast as possible but also with high economic returns. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the cooperatives to assist their members not only in selling their products but also at good prices.

20 In addition, the new market economy in which cooperative operate bring about new types of consumers who demand high quality products at reasonable prices and prefer healthy and safety food at international standards as well as environment friendly methods.

21 There are two important challenges for cooperative in all countries in the liberalized global economy. One is the open market economy in which cooperatives have to compete by offering high quality good and services at competitive prices, and the other is the well- being of farmer members which cooperatives have to create by offering services to them.

22 Cooperative need a strong identity and the same time an innovative ability compatible with the changing needs in the new market while maintaining the fundamental cooperative values.

23 To have power and wealth is not important. What is important is to able to live and eat through an economy that allows us to live simply and happily. This means being able to take care of yourself and be satisfied with what you have. (H.M. the King s speech)
