1 Names: Date: Period: History Team Challenge / Modern Conflict in Europe 60 pts summative plus 30 bonus points possible! Mr. Ream 2007 Objective: Students will understand the basic events and ideas that led to modern conflicts in Europe (WWI, WWII, and the Cold War). These conflicts greatly changed the geography of Europe. Instructions: Students will form teams of one to four persons. Each team will divide up their duties equally to complete this one packet. It is recommended that students divide up the work based on their unique strengths and interests. The research will take place in the library. I highly recommend favoring the use of books over the internet. The information is easier to find and often more accurate. The skills required include research, writing, drawing, reading, and critical thinking. WW I The Great War, the War to End All Wars 1. Between what years did this war take place (dates)? 2. How did the war get started (write a short paragraph i.e. 3-5 sentences)? 3. What countries were at war with each other (fill in the chart, not all spaces are used)? Allied Nations Leaders Central Powers Leaders 4. What countries remained neutral i.e. did not get involved (list them)?
2 5. MAKE A MAP: Please make a color map of the countries fighting each other. Include one color for Allied nations, another for the Central powers and also one for neutral countries. Please also label the countries (attach a separate sheet). 6. What new technologies were used in this war (complete the chart, include at least six)? Technology Invented by? Purpose Importance 7. Draw one of these new inventions (use color and label it, glue it on below). 8. Pick one of the following significant battles and describe its outcome (a paragraph). Marne Gallipoli Verdun Passchendaele
3 9. Describe five of the following terms (complete sentences, glue completed work on right here): Kaiser Wilhelm II Ottoman Empire Western Front Eastern Front Italian Front Trench Warfare The Christmas Truce of 1914 Espionage Armistice Treaty of Versailles 10. How did the war come to an end (short paragraph here)? 11. How Many were killed / injured (just the numbers)? Civilians: Military: Total: 12. How was the land divided up by the victors (short paragraph here)? WWI Bonus Question! (Work as a team on this one! Complete sentences please: attach) At the end of this war, the losing sides were severely punished for having started it. With the treaty of Versailles, Germany lost all of its overseas empire, lost important industrial lands in Europe, was prevented from having a large army, and had to pay large amounts of money for damages to the Allied powers. The country was in ruins and the people were out of work. How did this treatment of Germany for example, contribute to the start of the next world war only twenty years later? (Think about Hitler s goals for Germany)
