2 Background on the session theme Countries in transition are marked by divided societies, frequent violence, economic divide, lack of organized governance, etc As a result, loss of lives and property hinders the path towards national unity National Unity precondition for the growth and prosperity of a country

3 .Background Issues Democratic norms and regulations accountability, rule of law, elections, political party development, public administration, and economic reconstruction. Peace building process panacea to the ailing situation amidst conflicts culminating conflicting factions into solidarity Through Interim Government, Election, a written constitution, a strengthened justice system, and an engaged civil society stable institutions, efficient, transparent and accountable governance

4 .Background Media serves as a watchdog for a just, equitable and peaceful motherland Particularly Radio, the most pervasive means, supports the peace building efforts By raising awareness, promoting dialogues and hence trust between the various stakeholders Nepal plagued by such instances of conflicts comprehensive peace accord(cpa) in 2005, election conducted in 2007, declared as the federal democratic republic, But failure to draft constitution even with the extended period of constituent assembly a dark and grave situation of disintegration likely

5 Root Causes of Disintegration frequent outbursts of direct violencesuch as killing, shooting, bombing, torture, rape, and so on violence on nationalism, racism, sexism Extreme political ideology,mushrooming political parties, widening poverty and Socioeconomic Divide, Exclusion of marginalized populace from mainstreaming breaks the harmony and solidarity within a family, society social, political and economic disintegration may further exacerbate the peace building initiatives Once renowned for peace and bravery, Nepal plunged into a state of political rifts at times

6 Peace Building Initiatives in Nepal positive indications regarding the restoration of peace and unity Different initiatives and projects are undergoing Radio forums and other media as platforms to come together and ownership of peace process Establishment of Nepal Peace trust Fund to support implementation of provisions of the CPA accord an monitoring mechanism set up to monitor the quality and progress of the project activities Program in Four clusters, namely: 1. Cantonment Management and Rehabilitation of Combatants; 2. Conflict Affected People and Communities; 3. Infrastructure reconstruction, Security and Transitional Justice; 4. Constituent Assembly and Peace Building Initiatives on National and Local Levels

7 Media Role links between the people of a country and gives a real exposure to the mass audience about what is right or wrong With establishment ofpublic service Broadcasters ( PSBs) and community media, considerable progress in forming mutual trust observe Ethics and code, norms and values in its every service remit Voice of the voiceless, indigenous and oppressed people by reaching the unreached

8 Media Role at times media sector is polarized In a post-conflict environment,may incite violence and diminish the chances to move forward To alleviate such problems, Self-regulation and Code of conduct Balanced journalism and Free,fair,accurate media Use of ICTs such as online media, mobile phone technology and crowdsourcing platforms peace process can be facilitated by forming a groupand sharing resources with one another Peace Education, Peace Journalism promoted by Radio Nepal, Nepal television and community media in Nepal

9 Conclusion Frequent revolts, disparities in power wealth and access thwart developmental progress consequences could be national unity on stake considerable challenges still exists in Nepal to bring peace process to its logical end For easy transition into a prosperous nation a fair, democratic and inclusive political system is necessary besides the need for political consensus between the political parties media abiding plurality and diversity of opinions as an advocator of change agenda, peace mediator or initiator soothe the reminiscences of bitter and heart ailing stories of conflict affected families
