2 Congratulations on being selected to represent the SNP in your school election. I would like to welcome you to our team and wish you all the very best for your election campaign. This pack was created to ensure you have all the information you need to represent the SNP and run a successful campaign. A short history of the SNP will give you a grasp of our remarkable journey to becoming the government of Scotland today. Our record in government will further demonstrate that the SNP is the best choice for Scotland s future. Our fundamental belief that Scotland should be an independent country where the people of Scotland have the power to decide their own future has never altered. Our vision for the future and people of Scotland is based on this principle. When creating your manifesto for the campaign, you should make sure your policies meet the aims of the SNP s vision for Scotland; a better, smarter, healthier, fairer, greener, wealthier Scotland. You will also find lots of hints and tips in the campaign support section to help you along the way on your campaign journey, tips I keep in mind to this day. As an SNP candidate you should not ask for people to vote for you because the opposition is not up for the job. You should prove you are the best person for the job, with the best ideas to lead confidently. The SNP always stands up for what we believe in people like that and respect it even if they may not always agree with us. 3 What s the story behind the SNP? The 2007 Scottish Parliament and local government elections represented the breakthrough for the SNP. We have been the government of Scotland ever since. The Party holds two of six Scottish seats in the European Parliament, has been the third largest party in the UK Parliament since 2015, and is the largest party in Scotland's councils. Pupils are achieving more than ever through the Curriculum for Excellence with record exam passes in our schools And 16 and 17-year-olds now have the right to vote in Scottish Parliament and Local Government elections. More young students from poorer backgrounds are going to university than ever before. Scotland has more world class universities per head than almost any other country in the world and all of this with free tuition. Jobs and businesses have been protected through the recession - with the highest youth employment rates in the UK and business rates slashed or abolished for 100,000 premises. Scotland has safer communities, with crime levels falling and we have reformed the police and fire services. Patients are getting some of the best and fastest treatment anywhere in the UK with a record NHS budget and more staff than ever before. affordable homes have been built and families have been helped into home ownership with most of them being under the age of 35.

4 Our Vision for Scotland The SNP will always work to make sure Scotland is a fairer society, a more confident nation and a more prosperous country. We believe that the decisions which affect Scotland should be made by the people who live and work here. That is why we believe independence is right for Scotland. 6 3 Advice for running a successful campaign: 1 A GOOD TEAM is the key to running a successful campaign Make sure everyone is working towards the same goal and supporting the candidate to be elected. UNDERSTANDING WHICH ISSUES ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO THE VOTERS IS CENTRAL TO ALL CAMPAIGNS. The easiest way to do this is to speak to as many people as possible to find out what changes they want to see. You could design a survey or questionnaire to use when you are talking to people to gather the responses. 4 2 BE ORGANISED as a team, come up with a campaign plan and make sure everyone in the team knows what their role is and what they are expected to do. ORGANISE A HUSTINGS MEETING where all the candidates speak for a few minutes each and then answer questions from the audience. It should be chaired by someone neutral like a teacher so they can co-ordinate questions.

7 5 MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE POLICY PROPOSALS of your opponents and be prepared to say why yours work better. 6 BE PREPARED TO ANSWER DIFFICULT QUESTIONS but people don t expect you to know all the answers. It is important to be confident to leave a positive impression with the audience. 7 8 MAKING SURE PEOPLE GO AND VOTE ON ELECTION DAY is a very important part of your campaign every vote matters and you need to make sure your supporters know their vote counts. AFTER THE RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED, remember to thank the Returning Officer, shake hands with your opponents and thank everyone who helped in the campaign and voted for you, whatever the result. 9 ONCE IT IS ALL OVER, GET THE TEAM TOGETHER AGAIN whatever the result have a think about what worked well, what could have been better and what you have learnt for next time

8 TO GET YOUR CAMPAIGN OFF TO A GOOD START you could organise a launch where you introduce the candidate and give them the opportunity to talk about your vision for the future. MAKE A PARTY POLITICAL BROADCAST make a short video about who you are, what you stand for and why people should vote for you it can be good to get other people in the video endorsing you and saying why they will be voting for you. IF YOU ARE ABLE TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO COMMUNICATE TO VOTERS, it can be a simple way to get your messages across to a large number of people very quickly It can also be used to answer voters questions. MEMORABLE SLOGANS are useful in making sure voters know what you stand for, such as Stronger for Scotland. MAKE SURE THE VOTERS KNOW WHO THEY SHOULD BE VOTING FOR. Putting posters up, handing out leaflets or creating your own campaign newspaper, which outlines who they should vote for and why, will help people to make an informed vote. Top Campaign Ideas THINK OF SOME CLEAR, SIMPLE MESSAGES that communicate your aims and polices so that votes can easily understand why they should vote for you. EMPOWER YOUR SUPPORTERS TO GET OTHERS BEHIND YOU make badges they can wear or mini-flags they can walk around with so they can show their support and convince others you are the best candidate and party for the job. TRY TO BE CREATIVE think about what would make your campaign stand out and get people talking. ON POLLING DAY, GIVE OUT STICKERS AND BADGES FOR PEOPLE TO WEAR TO PROMOTE THAT THEY HAVE VOTED. You can even make them specific to your party for example: I ve voted for the SNP.

9 Tips for delivering a SPOT ON SPEECH Remember to SMILE It will help you to feel relaxed, and make you look confident. Be MINDFUL of your body language and make EYE C NTACT Focus on your supporters and the people who are enjoying your speech, this will give you more confidence and make you feel relaxed. Try not to rely too heavily on notes or to memorise your SPEECH try to understand what your main points are; what you know you will not forget. If you would like notes, stick to flash cards. Don t forget to BREATHE take your time, speak slowly and clearly. Show your PERSONALITY and grab the attention of the audience try to be witty, passionate and inspiring. Turn your nervousness into EXCITEMENT Remember that every politician started off in the same position as you, and even the most successful politicians can still get nervous before they make a speech. Keep your campaign POSITIVE. If you disagree with your opponent, make sure you only criticise their policies not the person. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... very few people are natural public speakers. It takes time, patience and practice. Never forget to say THANK YOU to the audience for their time and for listening.
