Palestinian Liberation Organization Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries Arab-Israeli Conflict oil embargo of 1973 Camp David Accords oil crisis of 1979 Iran hostage crisis Persian Gulf War war in Afghanistan war in Iraq Axis of Evil Arab Spring weapons of mass destruction Iran-Contra Affair Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy Clinton impeachment presidential election of 2000 response to 9/11 attacks wars in Iraq and Afghanistan **WTC<; COLE; OKC RELIGIONS Muslim those who practice the religion of Islam Jewish those who practice Judaism Jews and Muslims hate each other, but Muslims also disagree with each other. More on this later RACIAL/CULTURAL differences Arab-- 'Arabs' is an extremely loose and inaccurate term, which is basically used to refer to anyone who speaks one of the Arabic dialects and lives in a predominantly Muslim region. It s kind of like calling anyone who is tan and speaks Spanish a Mexican. Not intentionally inaccurate or racist, just easier for people who don t understand the difference. Persian many Persians are Muslim. They consider themselves white because they are descendants of the great Persian Empire. Persians speak Farsi. There are many Persians in Iran, but not every Iranian in Persian Confused yet? A large part of why the Western world is at conflict with the people in the Middle East is because we don t understand each other! PS- I will refer to these people by the country that they are from. Our story with the Middle East really began After WWII, with the creation of Israel. Blame it on the British! The different cultures lived together mostly peacefully when it was part of the Ottoman Empire. When the British took over they divided people by religions so that they could rule them easier. More Jewish people start moving into Palestine, hoping to create a safe place for their people. Palestinians do not appreciate that strangers are buying up a lot of land, and revolt against the British. Here is where the two ethnic and religious groups divide, because the Jewish people help the British. So, now all of the Muslim Arabs living in Palestine are the real Palestinians, and the Jews are invaders After WWII the British handed the mess over to the newly formed United Nations The United Nations divides Palestine into two areas: Israel (Jewish) and Palestine (Arab). This is done on order to fit the large number of Jewish immigrants coming in during and after the war. Over the next 20 years Arab countries often attacked Israel s borders. Israel kept winning and taking more land because it was supported by the West Attacks increased in 1964 after creation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)

The PLO formed to fight for the right of all Palestinians to live in Israel, because the Palestinians had lost most of the land given to them by the U.N. OPEC Another group forms to protect oil-rich countries from the West: OPEC Large Western oil companies set the oil prices for a long time OPEC ((Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) is a group of oil-producing nations that is able to set oil prices themselves. Yom Kippur War begins: On October 6, 1973, hoping to win back territory lost to Israel, Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Taking the Israeli Defense Forces by surprise, Egyptian troops gained back land. The Syrians were not as successful. A cease-fire went into effect on October 25, OPEC issued an oil embargo (you can t buy from us) against the countries that supported Israel in the conflict. This caused gas shortages in the US, and gas prices were raised really high really fast, hurting our economy. By the time that embargo ended in March of 1974, the average retail price of gas had climbed to 84 cents per gallon from 38 cents per gallon. Camp David Accords led by American President Jimmy Carter Ends fighting when Egyptian and Israeli leaders sign peace agreement Egyptian President Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Begin win Nobel Peace Prize Under the agreement, Israel would withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula and Egypt would recognize Israel s existence as a nation. Egypt would be the first Arabic nation to do so. Who isn t represented at these Camp David Accords? Do you think these accords lead to peace between Israel and Palestine? ---END LECTURE ONE--- Revolution in Iran Remember the Iran hostage crisis? This is that revolution. US helped to overthrow Iran s Prime Minister in 1953 Iran then ruled by series of shahs with absolute power In 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini, a Muslim leader, overthrows the Shah and takes control of Iran Ayatollah ruled Iran according to very strict Muslim traditions Oil crisis of 1979 The revolution in Iran hurt their gas industry, which created a shortage of fuel again. Gas prices were once again raised in what is called the oil crisis of After this and the shock in 1973, the US will start looking for people and places other than OPEC to provide energy. (Solar power, nuclear power, offshore oil drilling in US) Iran-Iraq War a river (Shatt al-arab) is the border between Iran and Iraq right before the Persian Gulf. Both countries would like it if they could take the river for themselves, so that they can ship oil cheaper President of Iraq Saddam Hussein thinks that attacking Iran for the river is a good idea because they were still dealing with the aftermath of the 1979 revolution It is the World War I of the Middle East : trenches, chemical warfare, and very little land gained/lost The US gets involved: Iran Contra Affair o background: Democratic Congress will not let Reagan send money to people in Nicaragua who are fighting against the Communist government (known as the Contras) o There were 7 Americans hostages in Lebanon o Meanwhile, Iran was fighting the war with Iraq, and we wanted the war to weaken both countries

o Members of Reagan s administration come up with a way to go behind Congress back, and solve both of these problems. o Known as the Iran-contra affair: Iranian forces would secure the release of hostages from Lebanon; in return, the US sold weapons to Iran. Reagan s people used the extra money to fund the anticommunist Contras in Nicaragua. o some parts of this deal were made without the direct approval of Reagan, and how much he knew is still debated. o When news of the scandal came out, the Great Communicator had lost the trust of the American people 1989 GHW Bush elected Bush 41 s 1988 campaign slogan was read my lips: no new taxes. He was more focused on foreign policy than domestic policy, because of his experiences as an ambassador and director of the CIA Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Bush postponed college, enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday, and became the youngest aviator in the U.S. Navy at the time 1990 Iraq Invades Kuwait *Find Iraq and Kuwait on your maps* 1990 Iraq Invades Kuwait to gain control of Kuwait s oil wells. The US tells Saddam he has until Jan 15, 1991 to leave Kuwait peacefully. Of course Saddam does not follow this deadline, but we were prepared for this, and began the Persian Gulf War: A group of 34 countries, led by the USA and Saudi Arabia, attacked Iraq to force it to free Kuwait Iraq loses after 2 months of fighting, codenamed Operation Desert Storm Both Iraq and Kuwait badly damaged during war Troubles in Bush s Presidency read my lips hurts President Bush when he compromises with Congress and raises taxes Rodney King: police brutality leads to riots in LA in 1992 Bill Clinton elected spoiler effect William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton Was elected to President at age 46 September 13, 1993: Oslo Accords: a set of agreements between the government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The Oslo Accords were not a peace treaty. For the first time, both governments acknowledge each other s legitimacy Oslo transferred control of the major Palestinian cities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the Israeli military to a newly-created Palestinian Authority, with plans to finalize how both groups would live together in 1998 Why has peace failed? We have a few ideas why: o Imbalance of power between the two sides (this is all about which group has the power) o Failure of the United States to serve as a tough but impartial mediator o Growing influence of opponents of compromise -- settlers on the Israeli side, Hamas on the Palestinian side. o The huge difference between the maximum Israel has been willing to offer and the minimum that Palestinians are willing to accept o Terrorist actions by some radical Palestinian groups haven t helped either It s important to remember that while these two groups are fighting, the people that each group represents are being killed. --end lecture 2

This is how L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina, one of the many elected officials who called on Time- Warner to have "Cop Killer" withdrawn, initially encountered it: "I have not listened to this song, but I am convinced by what I've read in news accounts that this is a totally inappropriate rap (sic) song" (Goldberg 1992, M2).

US HISTORY I The 90s Name The Internet The Internet became publicly used in the 1990s. Many new businesses (called dotcoms) were started and the economy grew 1993 Health Security Act Clinton wanted very badly to pass a bill providing universal healthcare in the US, and require employers to provide healthcare for their workers. Clinton appointed his wife Hillary to sell the idea to Congress and the American People Democrats in Congress offer their own solutions instead of supporting the bill Critics called the plan Hillarycare and ran advertisements against it (harry and louise) The Health Security Act was defeated in 1994 because there were not enough Democrats supporting the bill. Midterm Election 1994 republicans use the unpopularity of Hillarycare and big government when running for congress in Led by Newt Gingrich, Republicans across the country release the Contract with America: Republican plan headed by Newt Gingrich that focused on smaller government, balancing the budget, and cutting taxes. If elected, Republican candidates promised to vote on the different promises in the contract The contract works, and Republicans control the House and the Senate (1 st time since 1953) 1995 federal government shutdown The Republican congress and Democratic President don t get along, obviously By the fall of 1995, eleven of the thirteen platforms in the Contract with America had failed to pass. They can t agree on a budget, either, and the government shut down from December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996, for a total of 27 days. the public blamed the Republicans under the leadership of Newt Gingrich DADT LGBTQs banned from the military since the 1950s Clinton wants to remove the ban Clinton is forced to compromise. Known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy The military cannot ask if you are gay, but they can discharge you if you are out of the closet. NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA: took effect Jan. 1st, It is a trade pact between the United States, Canada, and Mexico that ended all tariffs (import taxes) and trade restrictions between the three nations. Ex. Mexico makes money by sending us fruits and vegetables, me make money by sending them corn Taliban A group of fundamentalist Muslims who took control of Afghanistan's government in 1996 Clinton impeached In November 1995, Clinton began an affair with Monica Lewinsky, a 21-year-old unpaid intern. In April 1996, Lewinsky was transferred to the Pentagon. That summer, she first confided in Pentagon co-worker Linda Tripp about her sexual relationship with the president. In 1997, with the relationship over, Tripp began secretly to record conversations with Lewinsky, in which Lewinsky gave Tripp details about the affair. December 1997: Paula Jones is suing Clinton for sexual harassment, and asks Lewinsky to testify. At first Lewinsky denies any sexual relationship with the President, but is convinced to testify truthfully. During the Paula Jones trial, Clinton denies any sexual relationship with Lewinsky Using the tapes and a blue dress that Lewinsky kept as a souvenir, Clinton is impeached for lying under oath about his sexual relationship with Lewinsky. He is acquitted and serves out the rest of his presidency

The election was very close Bush served two terms (8 Years.) Bush s presidency was dominated by the War on Terror. However, Bush originally wanted to focus on domestic issues. W s domestic policy No Child Left Behind was Bush s education initiative to help improve American schools. Its goals were to measure school performance by administering annual standardized tests o targeted more federal funding to low income schools. Bush Tax Cuts: President Bush won passage of two major tax cuts (2001 & 2003) which became known as the Bush Tax Cuts. o Supporters of the proposal and proponents of lower taxes claimed that the tax cuts increased the pace of economic recovery and job creation. In addition, they argued that lowering taxes on all citizens, including the rich, would benefit all. o These tax cuts reduced taxes for all Americans, though some evidence may show that the cuts helped the rich more than the poor 9/11: A terrorist attack on 9/11/2001 changed America We suspected al-qaeda because of the previous WTC bombing The United States declared a War on Terror In 2004 Bin Laden would officially claim responsibility for the attacks citing the US support of Israel and our interference with Iraq in the Gulf War Afghanistan US & NATO invade Afghanistan to take out al-qaeda group responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Of the three nations, he gave the most criticism to Iraq. This was how Bush described governments he accused of helping terrorists and seeking weapons of mass destruction. Bush said, "States like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world." War in Iraq In March 2003, Bush announces Operation Iraqi Freedom: The US led other NATO countries into Iraq: to find alleged weapons of mass destruction that the Iraqi government and Saddam Hussein were thought to have. to end a repressive dictatorship and bring democracy to the people of Iraq. Bush believed Hussein also had poison gas, as well as other weapons of mass destruction, because he had been developing them in the 1990s when Iraq was first invaded in response to their invasion of Kuwait. Saddam Hussein himself led the world to believe he possessed these weapons. In the course of the war however, no weapons stockpile was found- and the American people have been angry ever since

After the war Saddam Hussein was removed from power and a democracy was installed in place of the Saddam dictatorship. Hussein was finally captured in December 2003 and was hanged in 2006 after a trial found him guilty of crimes against humanity.

US History: Terrorism and George W. Bush Terrorism: the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Early Terrorism in the US On February 26, 1993, a truck bomb was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The attackers drove a Ryder truck into the basement garage of the North Tower. The 1,336 pounds (606 kg) urea nitrate hydrogen gas enhanced device was intended to send the North Tower (Tower 1) crashing into the South Tower (Tower 2), bringing both towers down and killing tens of thousands of people. It failed to do so but killed six people and injured more than a thousand. o Remember the Mujahideen? [cia trained them to help take down the communist government in Afghanistan] o They became an organization known as al-qaeda: a Muslim group, led by Osama Bin Laden, who has claimed responsibility for many terrorist attacks. o Al-Qaeda claims responsibility for the 1993 WTC attack Oklahoma city bombing: April 19, 1995 Timothy McVeigh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. The bombing killed 168 people and injured more than 680 others. o He and his partner wanted to destroy a federal building that had an ATF office out of protests for their actions during a raid in Waco,TX. o McVeigh detonated a Ryder rental truck full of explosives parked in front of the building. Bush said, "States like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world." War in Iraq In March 2003, Bush announces Operation Iraqi Freedom: The US led other NATO countries into Iraq: 1. to find alleged weapons of mass destruction that the Iraqi government and Saddam Hussein were

thought to have. 2. to end a repressive dictatorship and bring democracy to the people of Iraq. Bush believed Hussein also had poison gas, as well as other weapons of mass destruction, because he had been developing them in the 1990s when Iraq was first invaded in response to their invasion of Kuwait. Saddam Hussein himself led the world to believe he possessed these weapons. In the course of the war however, no weapons stockpile was found- and the American people have been angry ever since After the war Saddam Hussein was removed from power and a democracy was installed in place of the Saddam dictatorship. Hussein was finally captured in December 2003 and was hanged in 2006 after a trial found him guilty of crimes against humanity. Bush declared a job well done in ending the war so quickly, but our troops are still involved in combat in Iraq because of different groups fighting for power. Heard of ISIS? They are one of these groups. We began withdrawing troops from Iraq after the death of Bin Laden in 2011
