1 International Studies Minor Course Options and Requirements Fall 16 courses in bold An interdisciplinary minor in the College of Arts and Sciences must consist of six courses or 18 credits (a combination of three-or-more credit courses) for the graduating class of 2014 or later and must include either a required introductory course or a concluding seminar or project. Some programs require both. The minor should aim for a coherent shape appropriate to the subject matter and offer courses that give students a definite sense of movement, from a beginning to a middle and an end, from introductory to advanced levels, or from general to specialized treatments. Students must select at least three of the courses or nine credits (a combination of three-or-more credit courses) for the graduating class of 2014 or later from three different A&S departments. With the program director's approval, students may use one core course or one course from their major toward the minor. Students carrying a double major are advised not to minor. Each minor will be administered by a coordinating committee, consisting of a director appointed by the Dean and at least two additional members who represent departments included in the minor. Minors are open to all undergraduate students and courses prescribed by the requirements of the minor must be accessible to the students. ============================================================================================ The International Studies (IS) minor is an interdisciplinary minor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College. It consists of six courses of at least 18 credits total (it is possible students will overcomply by taking courses of more than 3 credits, resulting in more than 18 credits; six courses is the minimum needed). Following A&S regulations for interdisciplinary minors, the IS minor requires an introductory course (Foundation I), along with a concentration introductory course (Foundation II). IS minors may take the INTL 4941 International Studies Senior Seminar, as per A&S regulations, if there are spaces left. As noted, at least three of the six courses must be from three different A&S departments. The approved Foundation I courses are all considered Political Science courses regardless of their prefixes (e.g., INTL 3510, INTL 2546). Cross-listed courses are considered as department courses according to their registration (e.g., AADS 3325 / HIST 4341 Revolutionary Cuba taken as AADS 3325 is an AADS course), not two departments simultaneously. The IS minor comprises six courses of at least 18 credits, with a Foundation I course, a Foundation II course, and then four courses in a particular thematic concentration. Two of the thematic concentrations (Ethics & International Social Justice, Global Cultural Studies) have further sub-concentrations (GCS & Humanities; GCS & Social Sciences, GCS Area Studies) and thematic clusters. IS Minors may count a maximum of two courses of at least 3-credits each toward the minor from abroad. Foundation Course I (3 credits): Any one of these courses will complete Foundation I INTL 3510 / POLI 3510 Globalization NB: This is NOT the History core sequence(s) with the same name. INTL 2546 World Politics POLI 1081 Introduction to International Politics NB: This course is only for POLI majors; it may be a double-count for IS minor purposes only. It cannot be taken by IS minors with other majors (e.g., a HIST major/is minor may not take POLI 1081). POLI 1501 International Politics NB: This course is only for POLI majors; it may be a double-count for IS minor purposes only. It cannot be taken by IS minors with other majors (e.g., HIST major/is minor may not take POLI 1501). Foundation I does not have to be the first course taken in the IS minor sequence.
