Explaining Participation in the 2011 and 2013 Egyptian Uprisings examines protest mobilization for the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and June 30, 2013, coup. Using interviews with more than 170 Egyptians from 46 districts of Cairo, I examine why individuals who are not members of political groups choose to engage in revolutionary protest under an authoritarian regime. I argue that individuals are rational actors whose decisions to protest or not protest are affected by the interplay of political opportunity structures, mobilizing structures, and framing processes. Ordering of individual preferences in the decision-making process takes place through emotional mechanisms that are activated by specific situations and frames.
