Overall content Detailed description of content International organisations and multilateral cooperation are essential elements of global politics and key to understanding the current world. They govern the globe, bringing prosperity and peace, yet are increasingly being questioned: Great Britain voted to leave the European Union, the US administration is skeptical about multilateral institutions and free trade agreements, including NATO and the North American Free Trade Agreement. South Africa and Burundi announced their withdrawal from the ICC, and Venezuela has left the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In this course, we develop an indepth understanding of the structures and work of international organisations as well as the challenges they face. In the seminar, we will apply various approaches to the study of international organisations, going beyond mainstream IR theories to include critical, legal, historical, administrative and sociological perspectives. We will analyse the history, structures, work and challenges of global cooperation and international organisations. The course has three parts. The first part studies the research field, history, structure and bureaucracy of international organisations, giving us an understanding of the foundational structure of international cooperation and conflict. The second part focuses on particular areas of global regulation and problem-solving, such as trade, health, conflict, humanitarian crises, development. The third part focuses on different constituencies that relate to international organisations, particularly the UN. This part studies diplomacy, lobbying and NGO advocacy. Here we shall meet practitioners (a lobbyist from a Danish multinational company and a former Australian diplomat) and visit the UN City in Copenhagen to get a first-hand impression of the work and structures of the main global organisation, the UN. Political actors often emphasise the importance of multilateral cooperation and never before has there been so many international organisations. Yet, a core question remains: are international organisations making a positive difference to our world? In this course, we develop an in-depth understanding of the structures and work of international organisations as well as the challenges they face. We will apply various approaches to the study of international organisations, going beyond mainstream IR theories to include critical, legal, historical, administrative and sociological perspectives. We will combine such inter-disciplinary study with guest lectures by practitioners: a UN lobbyist for a green multinational company and a former Australian diplomat in New York. Three
2 general questions will be addressed: Why do international organisations emerge? Have international organisations made a positive difference in the world? Which challenges do international organisations face and which do they pose to states? Teaching and working methods Mini lectures by Klaas Dykmann and Line Engbo Gissel.
