2 FOR ITS 6 TH YEAR, THE NATIONAL FAIR TRADE CONFERENCE will head to Vancouver, BC, where the Canadian Fair Trade Network and many other industry leaders got their start. This year we will come together to celebrate the incredible growth and success of fair trade in Canada. I can t wait to deepen existing relationships and make new connections as we develop strategies and resources together! Once again, we look forward to welcoming delegates from across Canada and around the world. During the conference, we will learn about fair trade, share expertise and ideas, and connect with fellow leaders and advocates building on the foundation and energy of our past conferences, Calgary (2013), Toronto (2014), Montreal (2015), Winnipeg (2016), and Halifax (2017), to motivate and inspire continued growth across the movement. We are also pleased to announce that Fairtrade Canada will host their 6th Annual Fairtrade Awards at the conference, to recognize and celebrate the incredible achievements and leadership of fair trade stakeholders from across Canada. The awards are scheduled for the evening of Saturday March 3, This sponsorship package includes the information you need to get involved and make a meaningful difference. As awareness and support for fair trade continues to grow, the National Fair Trade Conference has become a key event for leaders to build connections and strengthen relationships. Sessions will focus on a range of topics in fair trade, from marketing fair trade and understanding trade policy, to sourcing and distribution, among many others. The conference provides an opportunity to look at fair trade from both grassroots and business perspectives, with the goal of broadening, deepening, and increasing the impact of the fair trade movement in Canada. 4 WHAT IS FAIR TRADE? Fair trade is an economic relationship based on respect and equality. When producers receive fair prices for their crops, they can take the lead in developing their communities. By paying fair prices for quality products, consumers in Canada build solidarity with producers in the global south. By cultivating long-term, dependable relationships between businesses and producers, fair trade helps build stability and consistency for marginalized producers, so they can plan and grow their operations. 6 ABOUT THE CANADIAN FAIR TRADE NETWORK At the Canadian Fair Trade Network (CFTN), we want to empower Canadians to take action and make a positive global impact. We developed our strategic plan and set goals that encompass four specific areas, or core pillars: the grassroots fair trade movement, organizational integrity, the fair trade business community, and federal policy change. WHY? There are 7.5 billion people on planet earth. We share the same basic needs and wants, yet many lack access to clean water, nutritious food, quality education, and/or basic health care. The World Bank estimates that over 800 million people live on less than US $1.90 a day. Small-scale farmers produce over 70 percent of the world s food, often while living in poverty. Inequality plagues the global economy: The eight richest people now hold as much wealth as the poorest 3.6 billion that s half the world s population. Most people lack basic rights and freedoms including freedom of thought, freedom of association, right to peaceful assembly, right to vote, ability to travel, basic security, and a free press. We are pushing our environment to its breaking point. It s time to change all of this and build something new and better. Ending poverty, confronting climate change, and securing human rights for everyone are incredible challenges. But achieving these goals is possible. Canadians have an opportunity to lead the way and initiate change. As individuals, we can learn about trade, alter our buying habits to reflect a global mindset, and seek fair trade products whenever possible. We can also work together and lobby our public institutions and municipal, provincial, and federal governments to adopt policies that can lead to a fair, sustainable world.
