Does what it says By Jeffrey Shek Had to pick this book up for a History class, and the book certainly does what it says it will. The book does do quite well though managing to keep the topics interesting... even when the reader may not be the most enamored with its reading. Which is a difficult task for any historical textbook, especially dealing with college students! However, for a quick brush up on reading, or for any average reader looking to gain some insight into this time period, I'd certainly recommend it. I have an above average interest with history, so I enjoyed the book immensely. Some of other college friends.. not so much. (Bear in mind, they are in college). I've picked it back up a few times and done a few reads over it to brush up on history. It's detailed enough, without flooding the reader with too many facts. All in all, a praiseworthy textbook. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Twentieth century boring By new breed of historian A textbook in many cases is a methodical read and sometimes one can get lucky and the textbook he or she is assigned can be enjoyable. Unfortunately this falls in the category first mentioned. It is written well and obviously researched expertly but it reads like a typical "textbook". By this I mean it can put one in a daze as one reads the material. In one way it is what one expects from a textbook, boring and dry. The facts are extremely helpful but the opinions espoused could be omitted so the reader can come to their own conclusion. If not for this book being "required" I would have put it in my bookshelf after the first chapter unfinished to collect dust. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I like it as much as someone can like a textbook. By kat This textbook was a requirement for my World History course in college. Though I felt like I read is textbook way too much, I have to admit that it was very informative and helpful. I learned so much about world history just by reading this textbook. it is pretty easy to read and relatively interesting. See all 14 customer reviews...
