2 WORDS OF WELCOME It is with great pleasure that I welcome members of the Rural Law Association of Europe to their meeting in Edinburgh. The last time the CEDR came to Edinburgh was for the very successful congress of 1982 and I trust that this first European Conference will be just as enjoyable. The two recent working parties on the future of the CEDR have recommended more frequent smaller meetings in between the congresses. I trust this will be the start of more similar smaller meetings where discussion and more direct understanding can be achieved throughout Europe between academics, officers and legal advisers to farmers and landowners. I have always found that discussions at understanding of Rural Law. CEDR meetings improves my knowledge and I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable meeting. Roderick MACKAY (Chairman Agricultural Law Association) I am delighted that the City of Edinburgh is the venue for this meeting of the CEDR. I extend a warm welcome to Scotland to all of the participants. The CEDR provides a forum for discussion of contemporary issues in the agricultural law of the Community. It has played a leading part over the years in deepening our understanding of Community law. In my own days in the practice of agricultural law I benefited greatly from participation in CEDR conferences. They have always been informative, but above all friendly, events. With every good wish for an enjoyable and successful conference, Brian GILL (The Right Honourable Lord Gill, Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland)
