1 Notes and Transcription of Notes Transcription Start Time: 0:00 Voice over (of the question ) Do you think corporations are people? Street Interviews 1 No Colbert Report THE WORD: Kismet! Time: 0:19 *GE logo replaces Kismet! No No No- w/a laugh Absolutely not It s a different animal They re not people-they do not have the same rights as people. I ve worked at Corp. America for years-they are inanimate objects. They do not have living and breathing rights as I do They do everything people do except breathe, die and go to jail for dumping 1.3* million lbs of PCBs into the Hudson River. Time: 0:28 Jamie Raskin, Professor of Law, America U and MD State Senator Interview ^ Picture shifts from Raskin to a panorama view of DC (? - Lincoln Monument maybe) with Raskin voice over continuing his message Most people understand that democracy is for citizens- for real live human beings. Most people understand that corp. are not people and yet the US Supreme Ct^ and the Citizens United case has now just determined that private for profit corp. are citizens armed with political rights. John McCain C-SPAN 2 Time: 0:49 For more than 100 years laws have stood to limit corp. donations to political candidates and
2 Notes and Transcription of campaigns- for more than 100 years** ** Shakes his finger This is about the people they represent, who live Time: 1:00 Senator Russ Feingold in a democracy and who deserve a political system D-Wisconsin where their views and interest and not completely (He reads from notes) drown out by corp. spending Time: 1:11 Peek hole out to old teaching film Coronet Instructional films Copy MCMXLIX Time: 1:20 Raskin Reel noise continues ^^ Noticeable editing cut _ Touches chest with both hands + Visual cut to Gene Wilder- Young Frankenstein w/ Raskin voice over ++ Monster Face visual Frank Monster goes to hug Wilder, assistant lights match, FM freaks out and chokes Wilder. What is a Corp? (visual and verbal w/ reel noise) What is a corp.- well a corp. has always been defined as a matter of law, as an artificial entity.^^ Up until the Roberts Court we have an unbroken line of precedent going back to the beginning saying that a corp. is something that has been created by the people, by the states, for the purposes of achieving our_ objectives as people and now suddenly+ the supreme court has turned it into a Frankenstein monster++ and said this creature of the people, creature of the state can intervene in our politics and spend its money as it pleases. That is an extraordinary dangerous thing. --From movie, Wilder speaking Good Good What is it? What s the matter!?! Give him the. Visual goes back to Raskin and a list of corps flash behind him. AIG Exxon Boeing Coca-cola `` Wal-mart flashes behind Raskin In 2008 the fortune 100 Corp. add $600 billion in profits, now image those top 100 companies decided to spend a modest 1% of their profits to intervene`` in our politics and to get their way.
3 Disney Fannie Mae GM Goldman Sachs Microsoft ADM News Corp Pepsi-Co Pfizer P&G Wal-mart Altria DOW Kraft Tyson Aetna Bank of America Wachovia Time Warner Lockheed Notes and Transcription of That would mean $6 billion would double what the Obama campaign spent, what the McCain campaign spent and every candidate for the House and Senate Colbert Report Time: 2:28 ^THE WORD: Just a Giant Middle Finger (pops up) ^^ THE WORD: changes to Through cartoon geckos? Time: 2:50 Congresswomen Donna Edwards D- Maryland, 4 th district Interview Sharp cut and zoom in Time: 3:10 Street Interviews Corp. have free speech but they can not speak like you and me- they do not have mouths or hands.^ Instead they-they must speak with the only way they can through^^ billions and billions of dollars. and I think if we were to image a world where corp. could spend a never ending source of their corp. treasuries on campaigns, on elections and on public policy then the people would completely lose our voice when we thought we actually had a voice here in this democracy- it would just be gone.
4 #1 has a button on jacket collar says NO- then something too small for me to see #4 may be the 1 st person in the 1 st set of street interviews Time: 3:32 Flash to the Top of the Constitution rolling from left to right in the background Time: 3:39 Raskin Time: 3:43 Donna Edwards (again) Raskin Time: 3:54 #Breaks away from Raskin and Freespeechforpeople.com pops on the screen with a white background Notes and Transcription of 1 They are getting a way with giving so much money now I don t think you need corp. directly funding campaigns Corp. are only interested in making a profit for themselves They are not driven by the American people they are driven for profit That kinda squashes the little guy and- and I don t think that was- that was in the- our Founding Fathers ideas when they wrote the Constitution. SO WHAT CAN WE THE PEOPLE DO? Only written words-no spoken words The Supreme Court has had its say- now it is our turn To take matters in our own hands to in act a Constitutional Amendment that once and for all declares that ah- we the people govern our elections and our campaigns- not we the corp. Now is the time for us to put in motion a great popular movement to amend the constitution to defend democracy against the champions of corp. plutocracy#. Go to Freespeechforpeople.com and find out how you can help us reclaim the 1 st amendment for people and defend our democracy.
