3 I. The Progressive Movement in American society advanced largely due to three progressive presidents A. Theodore Roosevelt B. William Howard Taft C. Woodrow Wilson Each president used the office of the president in a different way but all three carried out progressive reforms to better American society
4 I. William McKinley was reelected President in 1900 McKinley was assassinated six months into his second term McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist in Buffalo in September of 1901 I Theodore Roosevelt (VP) became the nation s 26 th president A. Former Sec. of Navy, NYC Police Commissioner

T.R. fully embraced the Progressive Movement and set out to protect the American people from the big businesses that controlled the nation Roosevelt s policies stated that every American should receive a square deal in their daily lives A. Roosevelt believed that everyone deserved freedom and fairness B. Square deal became the name for TR s progressive policies I TR used his executive power to influenced progressive legislation (laws) to better American society
9 I. TR believed many problems that Americans faced was due to unfair business practices by big businesses & monopolies (trusts) A. By 1900 trusts (monopolies) controlled 80% of the American economy B. TR believed that was unfair to the consumers (people) TR attacks trusts: A. TR believed there were Good & Bad trusts B. Big business can be good/ but they must behave responsibly C. TR filed antitrust lawsuits under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and forced businesses to compete D. His actions led people to call TR a trustbuster

11 I. T.R. stepped in to protect industrial workers during a 1902 labor dispute A. Coal miners stuck for a 9 hr workday and 20% pay increase B. The strike greatly depleted the American coal reserves TR negotiated a deal between the two sides and in doing so exerted executive power over business owners A. T.R. supported the strikers not the business owners (progressive) B. T.R. threatened to take over the business if the owners didn t agree to the workers demands C. Workers got a 10% raise and 9 hr workday
12 I. T.R. also used his executive power to regulate the most corrupt American industry: railroads A. Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) was created to prevent unfair practices but lacked power to do anything until TR T.R. convinced Congress to pass the Elkins Act and Hepburn Act both outlawed unfair business practices used by railroads A. Shipping rebates to big businesses and high prices for individual consumers B. Prevent RR companies from taking advantage of the American people C. US government was given control over railroad companies thanks to progressive reforms

14 I. Dangerous Foods and Medicine: A. After reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair T.R. appointed a commission to study the meatpacking industry. B. Found horrible conditions in American meat industry C. Passed two laws to protect consumers: i. Meat Inspection Act: required government to inspect meat shipped ii. between states to ensure safety Pure Food & Drug Act: forbade manufacture, sale or transportation of foods containing harmful ingredients D. Required all foods/drugs to have ingredient labels T.R. wanted to ensure that the foods and drugs of the American people were safe (square deal)
15 I. T.R. was first conservationist (save the environment) president. A. Realized American forests and natural resources were diminishing B. Promoted conservation of natural resources C. Set aside thousands of acres of forest reserves I. Created national parks and wildlife preserves D. Passed Newlands Reclamation Act: i. Allowed for damaged lands to be made productive again T.R. ensured that the beauty of American lands would be preserved for generations to come.

Like most progressives T.R. was slow to support African- American Civil Rights I TR did appoint some blacks to positions of power within the federal government: Many African-Americans believed that T.R. didn t do enough for the black race in their fight for equality and to end segregation IV. African-Americans formed the NAACP to fight for racial equality in the U.S.A. A. W.E.B. Dubois and other blacks fought for equal rights B. National Association for the Advancement of Colored Persons

National Parks, Trust-busting, Support for Labor Unions, Square Deal, Regulation of RR Roosevelt became the first modern president who used the press and public opinion to shape American society I His legacy can be seen throughout American society
