2 We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill Front cover from top Women s Royal Naval Service Apply to the nearest employment exchange, poster by Joyce Dennys. IWM (Art.IWM PST 2766), detail; One of the British Army photographers covering Operation TELIC, Iraq IWM (OP-TELIC ) A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN On 4 August 1914, Britain declared war on Germany. The subsequent events changed the face of Europe and of our society, and still shape the world today. As you know, they also inspired the creation of the Imperial War Museum in We now aim to lead the world in developing and communicating a deeper understanding of conflict and its impact in this country, in the Commonwealth and beyond. The First World War Centenary in 2014 presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to achieve this by redeveloping our First World War Galleries, and leading a world-class programme of activities to mark the centenary for the nation and the Commonwealth. Less than 50 per cent of the funding required to maintain what is a unique, free, educational and cultural resource comes, however, from government. We depend on the generosity of our donors to make up much of the shortfall. We are immeasurably grateful for the support we already receive from our donors and Friends, and I would like to thank all those who contribute in this way. But I do hope that some of you will feel able to go beyond that by becoming a Patron. Our Patrons will play an essential role in helping us to fulfil our mission to enable people to understand the causes, course and consequences of war and its impact on people s lives by making full use of the latest scholarship and the newest technology, and thus keeping IWM at the forefront, where it belongs. Patrons will enjoy a close relationship with IWM and will receive special benefits, including behind-the-scenes access to our collections, which we hope you will use to deepen your own understanding of IWM and our important work. Sir Francis Richards kcmg cvo Chairman of IWM 1
3 ABOUT IWM IWM is a family of five museums: IWM London tells the stories of those whose lives have been shaped by war from the First World War to the present day. Our galleries explore the complex origins of both world wars and illustrate what life was like for those who experienced war first hand. IWM North s multi-award winning building, designed by Daniel Libeskind, represents a globe shattered by conflict. Inside, we continue to explore the impact of war by bringing the stories of real people to life through powerful and thought-provoking exhibitions and displays. IWM Duxford is home to an impressive collection of over two hundred aircraft as well as tanks, military vehicles and boats, set in the grounds of this famous former First and Second World War airfield. Churchill War Rooms deep beneath the bustle of London lie the original Cabinet War Rooms today part of the Churchill War Rooms which sheltered the people at the heart of Britain s wartime government during the Blitz. HMS Belfast explore nine decks of seafaring history of the Second World War and beyond. HMS Belfast served in the convoys in icy Arctic conditions, the bombardment of German defences on D-Day and the 404 days spent patrolling waters during the Korean War. 2 3

Right Soldiers wait to board a Chinook helicopter in Helmand, Afghanistan, IWM (HTF ) EXCLUSIVE ACCESS AS A PATRON In recognition of your support and generosity Patrons enjoy a very special relationship with IWM. This includes invitations to Private Views and exclusive Patron events which give you a privileged behind-the-scenes insight into IWM s rich and diverse collections. IWM s art collection is one of the most important representations of twentieth century British art in the world. It includes work by some of the greatest artists of the last 100 years including Paul Nash, CRW Nevinson, John Singer Sargent, Sir William Orpen and Steve McQueen. Our documents include 18,000 individual collections of unpublished diaries, letters and memoirs including those written by British and Commonwealth servicemen since 1914, by civilians during the two world wars and by victims and survivors of the Holocaust. IWM s sound archive is the largest oral history collection of its type in the world and includes interviews with veterans of the First and Second World Wars, non-combatants and Holocaust survivors. Still from the film Battle of the Somme. British troops go forward in no man s land, IWM (Q 70167)l One of the many highlights of our extensive film collection is the original 1916 record of the Battle of the Somme, a pioneering battlefield documentary that was seen by huge audiences in the UK when it was released in August 1916, barely a month after the events it depicted. Left See the World and Get Paid for Doing It, poster by Alfred Leete, IWM (Art.IWM PST 7687), detail Right Women welders making stirrup pump handles during the Second World War. IWM (D 3589) Our collection of 11 million photographs includes official First World War photographs from the Ministry of Information, Second World War photographs by Cecil Beaton and Bill Brandt and photographs of more recent conflicts by Don McCullin and Donovan Wylie. 4 5
