COURSE OBJECTIVES The purport of this minor ( B - optional course) of Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette (KPE/DPE) is to acquaint students with the history and current position of diplomacy in the world politics. Furthermore, the protocol and etiquette shall be introduced and practised thoroughly. The course also stresses the basics of diplomatic law and offers an essential set of information which may be applied within an extensive common practice in the diplomatic service and other relevant institutions such as the EU, UN, and top management as well. The course encourages students to become familiar with and capable of engaging with manifold cruces in the field. Since this is a sphere of swift change, so it is indispensable to keep abreast of current issues. Students are advised to read The Economist together with The Financial Times regularly, and other press is upon students preference and liking. II. TEACHING ARRANGEMENTS The course consists of overlapping lectures (45 min) and seminars (45 min) once a week, and it takes place in the room no. KB 2.31 (Department of Political Science and European Studies, DPES) every Thursday. Students are not allowed to take photographs or videos during class. If a student insists on using a laptop, it is absolutely forbidden to surf the Internet, check s or text. If caught violating this ordinance, the student s grade will be affected weightily. III. REQUIREMENTS The students are obliged to attend both the lectures and seminars which may overlap. Moreover, students are supposed to be fully prepared and active during these classes. The maximum of two absences (i.e. x2 90 min) may be tolerated. In case of illness or other particular reasons for missing the classes, do inform the lecturer via forthwith. Please, note that the course is primarily designed for graduate, exchange, and undergraduate students, except for undergraduate freshers who have not passed the KPE/SPZ(D) exam yet. 1

ASSESSMENT The final grade is based on 4 course assignments: Class activity and tasks (10 %) Presentation (10 %) Paper (Book report) (30 %) Group viva voce exam (50 %) Grading: A % B % C % D % E % F 74.9 % Each student is expected: To be prepared for every lecture and seminar, i.e. to get acquainted with the mandatory readings, newspapers, and participate actively in discussions. It is taken for granted that students fulfil the obligations such as mini class-tasks. (max 10 points) Readers are available -here- To give a presentation (approx. 15 min) on diverse habits and traditions of behaviour and manners of a concrete country. Students shall introduce how to negotiate and deal with people or businessmen from this state. The country selection must be consulted with the lecturer beforehand, however, due 5 October (max 10 points) To write a short paper which shall be comprised of at least a 1-chapter summary (see below) followed and enriched by the student s comprehensive comments, observations, and/or comparisons with historical stances or contemporary situations, incl. substantiated APA quotations, and the DPES front page and bibliography, indeed. The minimum length for the paper: 3 pages. Do tend to eschew examining and/or describing other irrelevant characteristics of the book, please (e.g. the author, its cover, publishers, etc.). Moreover, note that you may submit the paper once, there is no other chance for a resit. Use at least 5 other academic sources to endorse your statements or observations. (max 30 points) Henry Kissinger: Diplomacy. Simon & Schuster (31 chapters) available upon request in a pdf and/or epub version. Let the lecturer know the selected chapter(s) you want to enquire due Wednesday, 5 October 2017 (3pm). You must hand in your printed paper to the lecturer due Wednesday, 9 November 2017 (3pm). Do use these programme attributes: Times New Roman or Calibri; 12; 1.5-line spacing There is a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. To pass the group viva voce exam consisting of two components: A) a diplomatic history question based on Kissinger s Diplomacy leading to interpretation up to the present time; and B) a practical of the protocol and etiquette. The groups of approx. 3 students shall be created randomly by the lecturer during the exam period. Please, do follow the official DPES Notice Board for the latest updates. (max points) 2
