1 Political Science and Diplomacy We are devoted to educating future leaders and democratic citizens in various fields including politics, journalism, and public administration, who have balanced perspectives between theory and reality. Our educational goals are to facilitate and enhance the understanding of political affairs and problem-solving capacities. We cover a variety of subjects from domestic to international politics. People and Society, - This aims to help students understand the general social phenomena, human interactions, and the political results that are the basis of an understanding of the essence of political phenomena. Introduction to Political Science, - This aims to acquire basic theories and key notions for political science. Introduction to Law, - This studies the organization, function, and procedures of selected national regulatory agencies. The principles affecting administrative discretion, administrative power over private rights, enforcement, and judicial control of administrative decisions are also studied. Introduction to Economics, - It is the economy that has a direct / indirect influence on administration as another important environment. Likewise, administration can effect the change and development of the economy. Therefore, this aims at providing knowledge of this field that is needed for deepening comprehension in administration to understand and discuss basic economics. College of Social Sciences Political Science and Diplomacy Introduction to International Politics, - This is a basic subject for the understanding of international politics. Various paradigm for the understanding of international politics are introduced Moreover, it aims to help students understand the main flow of modern international politics by debating the controversal issues of the current world. Comparative Politics, - This subject pursues the substantial evaluation of political phenomena by introducing the theories of comparative politics as well as an analysis frame which focuses on attitude and performance rather than ideology, norm or system, starting with the correlation of social structure and political structure regarding the maintenance and change of the political order, which is the fundamental object of interest in politics. 179

3 Literature and Politics, - This subject attempts to improve students' understanding of the political phenomena of the East and the West. Writers uniquely interpret our political lives. Their viewpoints can sharpen our eyes on the political world. Students are expected to read many books and to write a lot during the semester. Theory and Practice of Elections and Electoral Systems, - This covers voting behavior and electoral systems. Students are also to understand political consequences of elections and electoral systems. Introduction to Western Political Thought, - Great thinkers from ancient Greece to modern times, such as Plato, Aristotle, Locke, etc. are introduced and discussed. Students are to give presentations on each thinker. Political Parties & the State, - This provides students with an understanding of the origin and history of political parties and nations, as well as an understanding of the correlation of political development and political parties' development and the location, function, structure, and culture of political parties in democratic politics. International Organization and World Politics, - This subject will enhance the students' comprehension of the mechanism of international relations through research on the structure and function of international organizations (inter governments, non government, international, local) that are some of the actors on the stage of international politics. World Diplomatic History, - This is a study of the international relations of the past as the basis of current international politics. During the period from the Vienna Congress to the Second World War, nationalism in Europe expanded to lead to imperialism in Asia, which caused the breakout of the First World War and the following Second World War caused by the expansion policy of Hitler. Such a historical analysis of the flow of international politics further enhances the students' understanding of 1) the background of the formation of the current world order, ) the transformation of the world order and the fundamental factors that caused such a change, and ) the current status of the international system. Understanding Foreign Policies, - This is a study of various theories such as the process of policy making and the factors of policy making in foreign policies. This research is done as the basis for an analysis of the foreign policies of Korea, North Korea, the U.S.A., China, Japan, Russia, and Germany. History of Oriental Thought and Leadership, - This is a systematic study of the basic flow and structure of ancient to contemporary Oriental political thought. Theory and Practice of Political Economy, - This subject introduces the concepts and theories of the political economy and at the same time fosters the students' abilities to analyze reality utilizing the methodology of the political economy. Public Opinion and Political Marketing, - This aims to enable students to learn the methodology of public survey and statistical analysis as well as the general knowledge of political marketing. 180 Soongsil University Catalog

4 Division and Unification of the Korean Peninsula, - The origins and results of the national division of Germany, Austria, China, and Korea as the outcome of the Cold War are analyzed, and many theories and models to overcome the divided status are taught to foster the students' ability to judge and criticize various theories on the reunification of Korea in the future. American Politics, - In this the essence of American politics, history, and culture are taught. On this foundation, students learn the basic philosophy, political system, and political processes of the U.S. History of Liberalism, - The development of liberalism and capitalistic society is summarized, and analyzed. John stuart Mill and John Rawls, among all, will be emphasized. European Politics, - The structural aspects and patterns of political life in the various applications of the same principle of Western democracy-the congress system and the presidential system, the bipartisan system, and the multi-party system-are introduced in this, and the historical background and trends of the efforts for the integration of Europe are analyzed. Understanding North Korean Politics, - In this students will study the realities of North Korea, which has the same roots as Korea, and the two constituting the only divided nation in the world today. The domestic and foreign policies, economic policy, social policy, and the reunification policy of North Korea will be studied through audio-visual materials to prepare students for the era of reconciliation and cooperation between the North and South. International Relations in Northeast Asia, - The Northeast Asian policies of the four powers of the U.S., Russia, China, and Japan as well as Korea which formulate the international order of the Northeast Asia are examined, and their relations of cooperation and conflict are reviewed. Furthermore, various issues in Northeast Asian countries such as economic, military, and environment issues are analyzed and debated, and the peace and reunification issues of the Korean peninsula are approached in the special environment of the international relations of north-east Asia. Theories of Political Process in the Information Age, - The information revolution brought about by the spread of computers is accompanying a radical change not only in the areas of culture, education, and communication but also in politics. Recently political expression can be made directly without the other media of political parties or the mass media, and debating, opinion making, group formation, and even voting can be made via cyber space. This aims to analyze academically the changing characteristics of such political processes. College of Social Sciences Political Science and Diplomacy Political Sociology, - Political phenomenon does not occur independently. It is one of the diverse phenomena that happen in social life. In this the social impact of political phenomenon and the political impact of social phenomenon are analyzed. Politics of Russia, - The system of Russia after the Bolshevik revolution is historically examined, and the reforms of Gorbachev and the collapse of the Soviet Union are discussed. In addition, the current political system and political processes of Russia are 181

5 introduced, various contemporary political issues analyzed, and the overall political and social problems are discussed in order to predict the future of Russia. Issues of Korean Politics, - This covers ideology, culture, structure, elite, and leadership of contemporary Korean politics, as well as some selected issues. Civilization and Politics, - A critical understanding on modern society and modern culture is attempted from various viewpoints. The study is centered around Rousseau, Nietzsche, Foucault, and the Frankfurt School. Postmodernism and its limits are also reviewed. Modern Political Ideologies and the Third Way, - Though the ideological confrontation between democratic liberalism and communism ended in the early 1990s, a third ideology of a new socialistic way is trying to overcome the shortcomings of democratic liberal ideology and adopt the strong points of communism in the current political environment. This study attempts to grasp and analyze the concepts and ideological structure of such a third way, and to accomplish this introduces students to the history of modern political ideologies. Chinese Politics, - This analyzes Chinese politics from a comparative viewpoint. It pursues an understanding not only of the political process but political thought, society, and culture, thus enabling students to acquire a broad knowledge of the realities and trends of modern China. Especially, the makes an effort to improve the students' understanding of the political trends in China after the reforms and opening policy, as well as the relations between the central and local governments. History of Korean Political Thought, - Students in this will learn the fundamental flow and types of systems in Korean political thought from ancient to recent times, reflecting the current political realities of Korea. International Political Economy, - This study enables students to understand the political meaning and importance of international economic activities, and analyze the influences and characteristics of international organizations and global capital as new international actors with changed roles. Further, the influences of the new international political and economic order such as expanded free trade and regional blocs are discussed. Legislative Studies, - This mainly deals with how the representive politics works in Korea.
