6 Council of Ministers qnew Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has expressed her happiness on her appointment and said that the country's defence is constantly on the top of her mind. qmrs Sitharaman said, she was grateful for the confidence shown by the Prime Minister on her. qshe said, Prime Minister Modi always believes in giving women their due share. The Minister said, she is committed to serve the needy and poor people. Professionalism will have to prevail in all that we do. A good lot of probity and working together as team and making sure that Government of India functions and delivers. We have to delivere and keep in mind the poor of the country and also make sure all the promises given in the manifesto is full filled.

7 Onam Festival Greetings as per the official protocol qthe President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind in his message on the eve of Onam has said q On the occasion of Onam, I offer my greetings and good wishes to the people of the country, particularly to our brothers and sisters from Kerala. qcoinciding with the beginning of the harvest season, Onam celebrates the hard work and toil of our farmers. May this festival be an occasion for celebration and sharing joy with our families, while not forgetting to reach out to those in need. 8 Onam Festival qthe Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has greeted the people of our country on the auspicious occasion of Onam. In a message, he said that Onam, celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm, reflects the central role of agriculture in Indian society. qonam celebrations spread over ten days across Kerala are marked by diverse activities ranging from boat races, dance events to floral designs and martial arts competitions. qthe Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted the people, on the auspicious festival of Onam. q Onam greetings to everyone. May this auspicious festival enrich our society with happiness, harmony and wellbeing, the Prime Minister said.

10 BRICS Summit qprime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Chinese city of Xiamen on the first leg of his 2-nation tour. Mr Modi will attend the 9th BRICS summit beginning in the coastal and commercial town tomorrow. qthe theme of the summit is 'Stronger Partnership for a better future'. qthe meeting is expected to sign action agendas on Economic and Trade development and Innovation Cooperation. qsecretary East Preeti Saran said, India is likely to raise the issue of international terrorism at the summit.

11 BRICS Summit qdiscussions during this session are likely to focus on qglobal economic situation qinternational economic governance q national security development qother international and regional issues qthis will be followed by a BRICS plenary session where the leaders will discuss the practical cooperation for common development, people to people exchanges and cultural cooperation and institution building.

12 BRICS Summit qmeanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on BRICS countries to adopt a holistic approach to fight terrorism in all its forms and ensure that terrorists have no place to hide. qdelivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum in Xiamen today, Mr Jinping asked BRICS countries to take a constructive part in the process of resolving geopolitical hotspot issues and make due contributions. qhis remarks came days after US President, Donald Trump hit out at China's close ally Pakistan for providing safe havens to agents of chaos that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has much to lose by harbouring terrorists.
