Qualitative research Kaupapa Māori approach Literature Review PHASE : focus group discussions with whānau members - (rangatahi, pakeke, mātua, kuia and koroua) and others (whānau members who work with rangatahi in a variety of roles including through sexual health promotion and advocacy); & wānanga PHASE : hui after the focus groups to present preliminary findings for feedback and discussion PHASE : dissemination of findings to whānau & report to MoH, including literature review
Support whānau to identify the skills they need to talk with their rangatahi about sexual and reproductive health in order to support them to have healthy sexual and reproductive lives Genuinely listen to the voices of not just rangatahi Māori but tamariki, pakeke, mātua, kuia and koroua, and to fairly represent their views and opinions in our reporting Contribute to Māori knowledge and development

And how?: how do we engage rangatahi - & whānau
Roger Jolley, Traci Mato, Karen Pointon, Holly Russell, Arthur Savage, Phyllis Savage, Justina Webster, Ema Weepu Primary role: to assist with guiding the research Met: at whanaungatanga hui (6 Apr); & with the Rangatahi Taumata (27 Apr) Aidan Daly, Kahu Hepburn, Makere Kupenga, Ben Manukonga, Catherine Messenger, Mereana Pere, Sharn Webster, Hunter Williams, Salless Woods Primary role: involved in decision-making Met: at whanaungatanga hui (6 Apr); to share their views (20 Apr); & with the Rōpū Tohutohu (27 Apr)
How to support rangatahi Māori to have healthy sexual and reproductive lives and relationships including those rangatahi Māori who identify as takatāpui, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual or queer and including those rangatahi Māori who have a disability How to support whānau to role-model healthy sexual and reproductive lives and relationships
How to reduce STIs How to reduce unplanned or unsupported pregnancies among rangatahi Māori How to increase condom and contraceptive use among rangatahi Māori How to improve sexual and reproductive health services for rangatahi Māori What traditional and contemporary understandings of rangatahi Māori sexual & reproductive health are What traditional and contemporary understandings of the role of whānau in rangatahi Māori sexual and reproductive health are How to talk about sexuality
WHĀNAU RANGATAHI GOVERNMENT
9 female rangatahi Māori 8 male rangatahi Māori 7 rangatahi takatāpui 7 pakeke, mātua, kuia & koroua 8 older female whānau members (rangatahi, pakeke, mātua, kuia; including those who identify as takatāpui, and those who have a disability) 10 older male whānau members (rangatahi, pakeke, mātua, koroua; including those who identify as takatāpui, and those who have a disability) 9 other older whānau members working with whānau and rangatahi in a variety of roles, including sexual health promotion and advocacy) Wānanga with approximately 15 whānau members (including some from the focus groups & the Advisory Groups)
Rangatahi wāhine who identify as takatāpui (lesbian) Kuia Rangatahi Māori who have a disability AND Pākehā partners of rangatahi and Pākehā whānau (parents, stepparents, grandparents, aunties, uncles etc) of rangatahi Because research identified these groups as having either specific support needs or influence
What skills do whānau need in order to kōrero with rangatahi Māori about sexual and reproductive health? How do whānau support and include rangatahi Māori who identify as takatāpui in sexual and reproductive health? How do whānau facilitate a reduction in sexually transmitted infections among rangatahi Māori? How do whānau facilitate a reduction in unplanned /unintended /unwanted or unsupported pregnancy amongst rangatahi Māori? How do whānau increase consistent contraception and condom use amongst rangatahi Māori? How do whānau facilitate the provision of appropriate and accessible sexual and reproductive health services for rangatahi Māori?
Understanding that they are likely not the preferred source of this support. Courage to allow rangatahi Māori to their own decisions. The ability to have open, mutual communication. An understanding of whakamā and how it affects rangatahi tāne in relationship breakdowns. make Realisation that Te Ao Rangatahi Māori changes at rates never before experienced.
The foundation of whānau support of rangatahi Māori sexual and reproductive health is relationships if not with biological whānau, then with others who fulfill the same reciprocal role of support. Supporting rangatahi Māori in learning and naturalising healthy decisionmaking is important.
It doesn t matter what the conversations are about whānau just need to talk with rangatahi Māori! Open mutual communication is crucial to supporting them to have healthy sexual and reproductive lives and relationships.
Whānau need to realise that Te Ao Rangatahi Māori changes at rates never before experienced Changes are no longer generational - the world of a 17 or 18 year old is now distanced from that of a 15 or 16 year old
Our tipuna commonly had same-sex relationships and were accepting of sexual diversity and difference. They sought to embrace these elements of sexuality rather than to exclude them. Whānau support of rangatahi takatāpui today must mirror this same inclusion.
Rangatahi Māori believe they know enough about the transmission of STIs. This is not evident in their casual approach to condom use though, or in their STI rates. So, even though whānau may not feel overly confident in speaking to rangatahi Māori about STIs, they have a responsibility to do so.
don t have an STI so don t need one
Is the stigma of teenage pregnancy, Māori? Or is it non-māori?
A common understanding of unplanned pregnancy by rangatahi Maori is that they are confident and secure they will not be isolated by the whanau if they became pregnant.
Rangatahi Māori Sexual Health Services Sexual health services for rangatahi Māori need to be non-judgemental, welcoming and easily accessible. Social marketing targeted at rangatahi Māorii may be more effective than traditional health promotion.
Unuhia i te rito o te harakeke Kei whea te kōmako, e kō? Whakatairangitia Rere ki uta, rere ki tai Kī mai ki ahau He aha te mea nui o te ao? Māku e kī atu He tangata, he tangata, ā, he tangata! Draw out the heart of the flax Where is the bellbird that calls? Move this way and that Fly towards land, fly towards the sea Ask me What is the most important thing in the world? I will say People, people, people!
