It finds us in a world in which old ways of seeing and doing things appear to be in crisis, but yet with no clearly discernible new alternative, world views, ideas and practices to provide guidance on the way forward. As such, this is a perfect time to be a student. All the information at our disposal suggests that the next few years will witness continued job loss and economic tightening. Such moments, difficult as they may be, present conditions for persons, young and old, to invest in re-tooling and re-skilling, and most importantly, in building new knowledge and ideas that will help to shape the future. This is the essential role of a University, and this is why regional governments have invested substantial amounts of public funds in tertiary education. It is this public commitment to higher learning which explains your presence here today as an undergraduate member of the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work of the Cave Hill campus of the UWI, and to which I am pleased to welcome you. 5 THE MAIN LIBRARY The Main Library is open to all students and members of staff registered at this campus. The Library provides access to over 180,000 books, 20,000 paper periodicals, 80 online databases, 1000 electronic journals and endeavours to support the research activities of all faculties. The library collection comprises an ever-increasing number of electronic resources and as such the main gateway to research information is the library s website: Each faculty has a Liaison Librarian who serves as the first point of contact for information about library policies, procedures and services. Library services include research and reference assistance, inter-library loan, information literacy and research skills workshops, a computer lab, a wireless environment, a twenty-four hour reading room and closed study carrels. Students are reminded that for each course, there are two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorials. Copy only the relevant information from the master timetable. O. Under the banner system, students will be asked to sign up for a section. Please note that a section refers to the tutorial time and day. This must be selected at the time of registration. P. Part time students who have entered the university with lower matriculation, will be required to registered for only five courses annually. Three in one semester and two in the other semester. However, Level I continuing students may be permitted to register for a maximum of 6 courses annually, three in one semester and three in the other semester. Q. Full time students can register for a maximum of ten courses annually. Five in one semester and five in the other semester. However, to register for a sixth course, students must seek written permission from the Dean of the Faculty prior to registering for the course. R. At the time of registration, please check each course for the relevant prerequisites. These can be found at pages of this booklet. S. All Level I students should seek counselling from the Head of Department before registering for courses online to ensure correct registration. T. Students who have not passed English Language at CXC/GCE Grade I or CAPE and who have not passed the UWI English Proficiency Test must register for FOUN Fundamentals of Written English before proceeding to register for FOUN 1001 English for Academic Purposes or FOUN 1008 Rhetoric II: Writing for Special Purposes. 7 COURSES WITH SIX AND NINE CREDITS All departmental courses are three credit courses with the following exceptions: GOVT 3071/72 Independent Study I & II (6 credits) PSYC 3021 Research Thesis in Applied Psychology (6 credits) SOCI 3000 Supervised Research Study (6 credits) SOWK 3000 Supervised Research Study (6 credits) SOWK 3004 Field Instruction I (9 credits) SOWK 3005 Field Instruction II (9 credits) Students are advised to follow the instructions for the course work requirement pertaining to each course. COURSE WORK IS MANDATORY. ALL course work MUST be handed in within the stipulated deadline. Students should read the Notice Board and check the Departmental website: regularly. It is the Department s quickest and most convenient way of communicating certain kinds of information. Students must always report any change of name, address or telephone number to Student Affairs, Admissions. Course representatives are elected by the students in each class and the course representative is responsible for liaising with the course lecturer on matters pertaining to the class. Students are also encouraged to sign up in the Departmental office for a Faculty Advisor, who can provide assistance with their academic progress. Selected courses are offered in the summer, usually in June and July (Summer School). Students are encouraged to register for summer courses when they are advertised. The fee per course in Summer School is $ BDS. For examinations, students should always make sure that they consult the Final Examination Timetable for accurate dates and time of their examinations. Failure to attend lectures and tutorials could result in the student being debarred from sitting the final exam. Please note the University s General Regulations 21 and 22: 21. No candidate shall be admitted to any examination unless: (i) he/she has satisfied all the requirements and passed all the qualifying examinations prescribed in the Regulations; or (ii) he/she has been exempted from any such requirements by the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board concerned. 22. Any candidate who has been absent from the University for a prolonged period during the term for any reason other than illness or whose attendance 7

8 at prescribed lectures, classes, tutorial, or clinical instructions has been unsatisfactory or who has failed to submit essays set by his teachers, may be debarred by Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board concerned, from sitting any University Examination.
