1 Department of Political Science Instructor: David Steinberg University of Oregon Winter 2014 International Political Economy Course Description: This seminar provides an overview of the subfield of International Political Economy, the study of how politics influences the international economy and how global economic integration affects domestic and international politics. The class readings and seminar discussions focus on evaluating which theories of political economy and international relations best contribute to our understanding of international economic relations. The seminar is organized thematically. The first half of the course (weeks 2-5) addresses the causes of economic globalization, and examines how countries formulate their policies towards international trade, foreign direct investment, and international financial flows. In the second half (weeks 6-9), we study the effects of economic globalization in order to understand how states cope with the challenges posed by economic globalization, and why some have done so more successfully than others. Course Information: Instructor Contact Information: Office: PLC 923 Office Hours: Wednesday, 1:00-4:00 PM Readings: Journal articles can be found online. All other required readings (e.g. book chapters) will be placed on the course Blackboard site. Grading & Assignments: 1. Participation. All students are expected to complete all of the required readings before class and actively participate in the seminar discussions. Participation will make up 20% of the final grade. Participation grades depend on both the quantity quality of your participation in class discussions. Students will receive high participation grades if their class comments demonstrate that they have knowledge of the main arguments of the week s readings; an understanding of the important areas of agreement and disagreement between the different readings; and an ability to critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of various theories and methodologies. 2. Discussion Questions. Students are required to submit two discussion questions about the readings prior to each class (excluding week 1). The questions should 1

2 focus on the major contributions or weaknesses of one or more readings. These questions must be via to the instructor. They are due 24 hours prior to the start of the seminar (2:00 PM on Sunday). These questions count for 5% of the course grade. 3. Short Papers. Each student is required to write two short papers over the course of the quarter. These papers should be 2-4 single spaced pages in length. Each paper will be written in the format of a referee report for an academic journal. For each assignment, students evaluate one unpublished paper. In doing so, students will act as if they were reviewing this paper for an academic journal. In these referee reports, students will describe the paper s strengths, weaknesses, and suggest ways to improve the paper. A sign-up sheet, where students will select papers to review, will be circulated during the first week of class. Each short paper is worth 15% of the course grade. 4. Final Research Paper. Students must write one final class paper, worth 40% of your grade. These papers should be (approximately) double-spaced pages. The papers are due at 5:00 PM on March 19, Students are also required to hand in a 2-page proposal for the paper on Feb. 17, which will count for 5% of their grade. The topic must relate to international political economy, but students are free to choose among several different types of papers. Possible options include, but are not limited to, the following: a critique of a particular literature within IPE; a research design paper; a qualitative analysis of one or more cases; or a quantitative analysis. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the instructor on a regular basis to discuss progress on their papers. Policy on Late Papers & Extensions: Late papers will be penalized one letter grade per day (24-hour period). Extensions will only be granted if students provide official documentation (e.g. doctor s note) that explains the necessity of an extension. Academic Honesty & Plagiarism: By enrolling in this course, you agree to abide by the University s Student Conduct Code. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. All work submitted for this course should be original; work that was fully or partially completed for another course will not be accepted. Any student that violates these policies will receive an F grade in the course and will be reported to the University authorities. Please ask the instructor if you have any questions about what constitutes plagiarism or cheating. Students with Disabilities: The University of Oregon is working to create inclusive learning environments. If there are aspects of the instruction or design of this course that result in disability-related barriers to your participation, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.
