FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, CENTS Sunnyside Teens Honored Story & Photos By Sandy Jimenez On Friday, October 23 rd, 6 teens from our neighborhood were honored for their love of reading. These teens participated in a citywide virtual program called The Teen Book Slam. This is the second year of the program. Last year, Sunnyside teens had the highest percentage of participation in all of Queens. This year they had the second highest percentage. The program was created by Vikki Terrile, Coordinator of Young Adult Services at the Queens Public Library. She had originally wanted to create a battle of the books. It would have taken a lot of coordination especially since teens often have a hard time traveling out of their neighborhoods. She figured that most teens would be comfortable meeting in a virtual space. The program works through and blog communications. Over the summer, participating young adults read 5 novels in 5 weeks. They read Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock; Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson; Dramarama by E. Lockhart; The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie; and the The Uglies by Scott Westerfield. The books were chosen from among award winners and lists of recommended books for teens. Participants answered 20 trivia questions about each book. Students received one point per correct answer. The first place winners got all the questions correct for 100 points! Students from all over Queens participated. Winners received gift certificates and participating branches received parties in a bag, which they could use to celebrate participants. Schumer (D-NY), Arlen Specter (D-PA), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) today announced that they have made a bet on the outcome of the series. The winners of the bet will receive a supply of delicacies from the loser s home state, cheesesteaks from Philadelphia or Junior s cheesecakes from New York. Twenty art and performing arts organizations from all over Queens attended, including the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce s Rebecca Barker. Sunnyside Shines is one of many host locations throughout Queens. Queens Art Express, or QAX, will take place in June of 2010, the exact dates not yet set. The Art Express is still young, only two years old, and is the brainchild of Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, Executive Director of Queens Council on the Arts. Hoong Yee has done a great job with this, and this year will be even better, said Theresa Osborne, Director, Cultural Affairs and Tourism for the Borough President s office. Attending also was Lisa Schwartz, the MTA point person for QAX. The attending artists, art-related organizations, which include dance and theater, make frequent use of Internet social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, Krakauer announced a grant given to QCA from the Rockefeller Foundation for $100,000 to implement the ArtXPhone, a cell phone tour to link arts events and promotions. We want to encourage the 400,000 riders of the No.7 train to see themselves as cultural tourists (Continued on Page 5) New York and Pennsylvania Senators Wager on Yankees-Phillies World Series Yankee victory with my friends Senators Casey and Specter, said Senator Gillibrand. It should be a terrific matchup between two great organizations, but I give the edge to the Bronx Bombers. The last team to win back-to-back World Series championships was our Yankees - that record will hold strong this year. Their lineup and pitching is superb and New York does have the best fans in the world. Go Yankees! Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development Dennis M. Walcott, and Chancellor Joel I. Klein today launched an enhanced 311 service for public school families which provides an easy-to-use resource for parents and guardians seeking answers about their children s education. Parent coordinators at each school will continue to be the first point of contact, but families can now select a new option on 311 s main menu to reach an expert trained in responding to education-related issues, including questions pertaining to enrollment, transportation, and admissions. In the past, families seeking information had to know which of several Department of Education hotlines or offices could answer their particular question there were distinct numbers for elementary school, middle school, and high school enrollment, for example, and a transportation hotline. All of these questions can now be addressed by specially-trained experts at 311. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor Walcott, and Chancellor Klein made the announcement at a new 311 call center in Brooklyn set up specifically to answer parents calls, and were joined by the Department of Education s Chief Family Engagement Officer Martine Guerrier, and Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) Commissioner Paul J. Cosgrave, Council Member David S. Yassky, State Senator Daniel L. Squadron, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. The City s 311 service has been a tremendous success, and now we re extending its reach to our public school families to make it easier for them to get answers about enrollment, busing, and other issues that affect their children, said Mayor Bloomberg. Since 2002, we ve focused on providing families with the information they need to be full partners in their child s education from placing a parent coordinator in every school to giving families online access to their child s attendance, grades, and test scores. Adding this new service to 311 further ensures our families can stay well-informed and engaged in their children s education. This enhanced 311 service fulfills the Mayor s promise in the 2009 State of the City address earlier this year to make it easier for parents and guardians to get information and find answers. Education experts dispensing information at the enhanced 311 have already handled nearly 60,000 calls during a four-month pilot of the new service, during which calls to Department of Education offices were routed to 311. In the past, many calls would have required families to leave messages and wait for return calls; some issues were not resolved for days or longer. Today, more than 80 percent of questions are answered in one call averaging four and a half minutes. The MetLife Foundation donated some of the initial private funding to the The Fund for Public Schools for this initiative. This enhanced 311 service builds on the progress the City has made since 2002 in engaging public school families and making it easier for them to navigate the nation s largest school system, which serves 1.1 million students. Every school now has a parent coordinator, who should continue to be a family s first stop for education information, particularly school-specific questions about classroom assignments, parent-teacher conferences, the school calendar, and class schedules. Parents can also turn to other newlycreated resources, including District Family Advocates and the Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy which holds events, workshops and training sessions to help educate parents about how to become involved in their schools and taking an active role in their children s education. Additionally, an online student data system which was launched last spring is an innovative tool that for the first time gives families online access to their child s school attendance, test scores, grades, and other important information in one place. About the 311 Customer Service Center The 311 Customer Service Center was established in 2003 to give the public quick and easy access to all non-emergency City government information and services. Calls are answered by operators, 24 hours a day, seven days a week in an average of 15 seconds, with 85 percent of all calls answered in 30 seconds or less. Approximately 50,000 calls come in to 311 daily, and translation service is provided in nearly 180 languages. All of the young women who were present are among the many regular visitors to the new space, which has its own computers, young adult books, graphic novels, magazines, and couches! There are also many teen specific events that center on books. Last year there was a teenbanking program, which taught teens to manage their money. At the party, the participants made glass bead necklaces, received gift bags, and snacked away. The girls spent most of the time talking about books. The bookloving teens agreed that the Harry Potter books are the best! They also like the Clique series and the Twilight series. The partygoers were Sanya Goswami, a first placer and the youngest participant; Abeda Alam, fourth placer and a top five placer for 2008; Fathema Ahmed, who only heard of the program when the library reopened and completed all of the readings in a week and placed fourth; and Tahmina Hussain, who wrote amazing book reviews for the summer reading program. Of course, Vikki Terile was there. She was joined by Abigail Goldberg, a senior librarian and liaison for the program, and Manuel Figueroa, the library s Assistant Director. The girls convinced Mr. Figueroa to read one of the books by describing it enthusiastically. He had borrowed it before the party was over. I had a great time meeting these amazing teens! Crowley Applauds Extension of Unemployment Benefits Helping over 89,000 New Yorkers This Year Just in Time for the Holidays Legislation will extend unemployment benefits slated for elimination in December of this year; extends benefits for up to an additional 13 weeks once signed into law. Congressman Joseph Crowley (D- the Bronx, Queens) applauded passage of up to 13 more weeks of extended unemployment benefits for an estimated 89,662 out-ofwork New Yorkers who would have run out of unemployment benefits this December. The extended benefits were approved for 29 high-unemployment states including New York by the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009 (H.R. 3548). The bill does not add to the federal deficit, and was passed by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of New York has been severely impacted by the economic downturn and I am glad additional aid will be provided to those in Queens and the Bronx who have been hardest hit by this recession, said Congressman Crowley. Over 89,000 New Yorkers and their families would have seen their unemployment benefits evaporate during the upcoming holiday season if not for this act by Congress. The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009 (H.R. 3548) will help over 89,000 New Yorkers, with benefits including: Up to another 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in 29 high unemployment states including New York. This brings the total number of emergency benefits to 46 weeks for out-of-work New Yorkers; Extension of unemployment benefits for an estimated 89,662 workers in New York, who would otherwise exhaust both their regular and American Reinvestment and Recovery Act-extended benefits by the end of the year; Assistance for over a total of one million jobless workers across the nation who reside in other high unemployment States who are projected to run out of unemployment compensation by the end of the year. The extension of unemployment benefits is deficit-neutral and it is fully paid for by a one-year extension of the federal unemployment tax and a systemic reduction of overpayments. Congressman Crowley is a co-sponsor of the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009 and a member of the exclusive Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over the unemployment insurance program. Decorations were the first item ignited in an estimated average of more than 1,000 home structure fires per year during , according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report Home Structure Fires that Began with Decorations more than half of these fires were started by candles. There are many things that parents, kids, and adults can do to make sure that Halloween remains a very safe holiday, said Lorraine Carli, NFPA s vice president of communications. It is important to know how to get out of a room or a building in case of emergency no matter where you are, and to teach kids to do the same, said Carli. A haunted house is a unique venue and with other things competing for your attention, it may take a little extra effort to identify exits and plan your escape; however, if there is an actual emergency or the ghosts and goblins simply get too scary, you ll be glad you did! Avoid using billowing or long trailing features. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out. Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting or as part of their costume. Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candles in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Bonilla approached the Queens Council of the Arts, a 501-c-3 non-profit, which coordinates the QAX event, to make sure that this year, the Sunnyside area was included more fully in the map and extravaganza. We knew it would be good for our merchants and our area. We applaud the Sunnyside Shines initiative. Our many artists and arts organizations will benefit from connecting with the soon-tobe global audience of the Queens Art Express. Marc Leavitt, a Board member of LICartists, Sunnyside Chamber, Kiwanis and local attorney, said, Queens is the most amazing area ever with a richness of culture that is unparalled. We live together in a way that everyone in the world could. The Art Express will be a way for us to put that on display for the world. David Bromley, who is the event head this year, has been reaching out to business leaders, business improvement districts, community members and arts organizations to ensure that the event includes all who are able to participate. Bromley said, I have a dream job. Krakauer asked substantive questions and input from attendees such as how long a period to hold the event and how best to publicize it. Father Brain P. Dowd, new Pastor at Queen of Angels, announced that the local church is working again with the Sunnyside Artists group to host the third popular Queen of Angels non-denominational art show how to coincide with the June event. Former Pastor Vincent Daily started the show. A percentage of all art sales will go as before to our local food pantries. The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce will help sponsor the Sunnyside Artists events, with Chamber Board Member Rebecca Barker taking the organizational reins from this author. This year, plans are to try for a juried, competitive show nearby, and at other Sunnyside sites, a children s art competition. She pulled into a bus stop, he said he was a mechanic, said she should pop the hood, said this and that was wrong, put water in the radiator and asked for $ She had $50.00 with her, which she gave him. However, foreclosure is nothing new, and there are myriad reasons that a homeowner might be facing dire straits. Challenges might include economic hardship due to job loss, bad health or divorce, or payments that jumped too high after a rate adjustment, or simply increased cost of living outpacing income. Whatever the reasons, the best way to avoid foreclosure is to be well educated and prepared before making a home purchase, and anticipating worst-case scenarios before choosing the loan that is right for you. If default appears inevitable, know that there is help available, with a short sale being the last resort for resolution. Such a transaction is called short, because the home is sold for less than the amount remaining on the mortgage, and the lender willingly accepts some of the loss. If you re facing a foreclosure, contact your lender s loss mitigation department immediately.
